It’s always the same with these soft porn movies - automaton dressed in an engineer’s uniform is being handcuffed and tied up, and you lose half an hour until a story gets going.

Exactly! Flushed Away… great one, but always in the shadow of Ratatouille (“that other movie with rats, which is not Ratatouille”). BTW, isn’t it interesting that there’s a bizarre trend in movie industry that twin movies gets released in extremely short time span? You know Flushed Away-Ratatouille, United 93-Flight 93, The Prestige-The Illusionist…

Sometimes coincidence (two people having the same idea at the same time), often intentional (our rivals are making something big so we need to one-up them and make a similar movie and release it within a shorter timeframe or: that movie was a smash hit so let’s make a similar one), and sometimes typical Hollywood backstabbing: a writer goes to a producer with an idea, the producer likes the idea but doesn’t want to pay the writer so he just gets another script written with that same idea (which most of the time wouldn’t be patented so outright theft is an option) yet in the meantime the writer successfully sells his script to another studio - and BAM! Dueling movies!
Two Robin Hood movies, two Columbus movies and two Wyatt Earp movies in the early 90s, Victor/Victoria and Tootsie, E.T. and Starman, K-9 and Turner & Hooch, Volcano and Dante’s Peak, Armageddon and Deep Impact, The Matrix and Dark City and The Thirteenth Floor and eXistenZ, Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line, A Bug’s Life and Antz, The Truman Show and EDtv, The Haunting and House on Haunted Hill, Mission to Mars and Red Planet, Madagascar and The Wild, Happy Feet and Surf’s Up, Capote and Infamous, The Descent and The Cave, The Road and The Book of Eli, Mirror Mirror and Snow White & the Huntsman, and more recently: No Strings Attached and Friends With Benefits, Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down, and now The November Man and The Equalizer.

That’s an interesting explanation, it’s the inverted process of B studio’s low-budget say, disaster movies who cash-on on the originals. (so it could be said that, in movie industry, rich steal from the poor but also poor steal from the rich ) But it’s also interesting how often, like those movies you mentioned, both movies are of solid quality (like the two ants movies)
