The Big Adventure Gamers “VS - There Can Be Only One” Tournament
Poll: Would you like to have a group stage before direct knock-out duels? Total Votes: 32 |
|

Group stage before the direct elimination duels | 22 |
Immediately start with the knock-out rounds (128 - 64 - 32...) | 10 |
This competition is making me glad the real experts were in charge of the official Top 100. Broken Age instead of Amber or Toonstruck? Syberia 2 instead of Callahan’s? Moment of Silence over JP3? Crazy stuff.
I completely agree for those games, but let’s not forget that in the official Top 100, Toonstruck was on 93rd and Callahan’s on 66th spot, so both out of the 64 and that was still without of this new wave of games of a past few years. Now some of those games that were 65-100 on that list are passing quite comfortably in stronger competition, so it goes both ways
As I said before, quality alone is not the sole factor here (which is for the Top-100). It is also popularity and availability. Many older games (Callahan’s and Toonstruck come to mind) were not easy to be found and played by newer players, thus not voted that much.
Yeah, obviously the results will be impacted by what games people have actually played. This is particularly sad for console- or handheld-exclusive games, and for out-of-print games that weren’t originally big hits.
Also, despite the noble attempt to seed the groups and balance them out, some groups by happenstance just seem to have a very strong lineup and others don’t. But I guess that’s where the drama and surprises come from!
Happy New Year everyone!!
I thank all who participated in this second part of the group stage. The voting is finished now, I will recalculate wherever there is a point difference less than 10 and it’s between spots 1-5. (Last time Karlok did control work and I thank her immensely on that ) After that we’ll definitely know all 64 games that passed to the knock-out stage.
A semi-automatic draw for the elimination rounds will be held on January 4th at 23:00 (GMT). I will post the bracket and explanation of the draw soon. After that voting for the R64 matches can start.
I’m a bit confused - in group N both LSL 7 & BS5 both got the same no of points so why is it that LSL 7 has appeared in the top 4 & not BS5?

It’s because Larry has more 7pt votes, a similar situation was in group C with Dark Fall and Stanley Parable.
Just an explanation about the draw on Sunday. We will use brackets that TimovieMan suggested, all the games from one group have mutually dependent spots in the draw, because we want to eliminate the possibility that the games from the same group meet before the semis. Also first placed games cannot meet before the round of 16, because 1st placed are matched with 4th placed and 2nd placed with 3rd placed in R64 and after that winners of these go between themselves. So it will be enough just to draw a number for the whole group, instead for each game separately.
In order groups would be drawn, the games will take these positions:
group I:
First placed - R64_1
Second placed - R64_61
Third placed - R64_35

The draw for the group numbers will be held on Sunday 4th, at 23:00 GMT.
Surely that’s the second biggest bracket I’ve ever seen
(Great job, Bogi, looking forward to the draw)
Are you drawing all 16 groups together (i.e. shuffling A-P which was what I had in mind when I proposed those brackets), or just shuffling A-H and I-P (which sounded like what you had in mind) instead?
Either way works.
And please tell me you used some kind of program for those ASCII brackets…
The truth can’t hurt you, it’s just like the dark: it scares you witless but in time you see things clear and stark. - Elvis Costello
Maybe this time I can be strong, but since I know who I am, I’m probably wrong. Maybe this time I can go far, but thinking about where I’ve been ain’t helping me start. - Michael Kiwanuka
Thanks Wilco, much appreciated.
@Tim
I’ll go with your original suggestion - all groups shuffled, when I quickly thought about it, those separation I suggested didn’t have much sense
I’m now thinking about voting threads opening/closing schedule. Four duels per thread you suggested seems just about right, but after this group round I think maybe we should shorten a time period, but I’m not sure what would be the best way (or perhaps we should leave it like this). As a remainder, this was the original plan:
Day 1 - R64 bracket 1 open
Day 2 - R64 bracket 2 open
Day 3 - R64 bracket 3 open
Day 4 - R64 bracket 4 open
Day 5 - R64 bracket 5 open - bracket 1 closed
Day 6 - R64 bracket 6 open - bracket 2 closed
Day 7 - R64 bracket 7 open - bracket 3 closed
Day 8 - R64 bracket 8 open - bracket 4 closed
Day 9 - R64 bracket 5 closed
Day 10 - R64 bracket 6 closed
Day 11 - R64 bracket 7 closed
Day 12 - R64 bracket 8 closed
Everyone feel free and encouraged to give your thoughts about this.
And Caliburn, if you are reading this your notes posted as instructions in each group thread were invaluable, I would be very grateful if you could done something similar, when we create new bracket threads.
P.S. Regarding ASCII brackets, I found them on the Web but they had animal species names inside them, so still needed to rename them manually
Is 4 days enough for voting? Maybe make it a little longer to close brackets after 7 days to give more people the chance to vote? What do you think?
I like the idea of a 4 day window. Seemed like nearly all of the voting was done in the group rounds within the first 4 days, and then there was just a lot of waiting for them to close.
A 7 day window seems more appropriate for me.
It might take a bit longer, but we are in no rush, and it will ensure that everybody who is interested has enough time to vote.
