AG Community Playthrough #71: The Shapeshifting Detective
Didnt realize the stopping point. I think i m at 20:00. Played for an hour and a half total yesterday and today. The game is quite interesting. I m certainly curious to find more about the murders. There isnt much gameplay though so far. you just take all the roles and do all the dialogues. Also it seems the story moves pretty fast.
No worries, that’s our next stopping point. You just got there a little early that’s all.
I’m glad you find the game interesting, the plot does get more convoluted later on.
I enjoy playing adventure games on my Alienware M17 r4 and my Nintendo Switch OLED.
I played to the stopping point.
It’s definitely and interesting game and a nice idea for game play.
I really liked the opening credits already. It seems that the first radio snippet is actually repeated at this stopping point - with subtitles.
I’m very very lost with what’s going on, which is a good thing I guess. Can’t wait to unravel the mystery. I’m already thinking that the game is probably worth replaying, because it’s definitely going to feel a lot different when the player knows things.
Currently Playing: Dragon Age Origins: Awakening
Recently Played: Red Embrace: Hollywood, Dorfromantik, Heirs & Graces, AI: The Somnium Files, PRICE, Frostpunk, The Shapeshifting Detective (CPT), Disco Elysium, Dream Daddy, Four Last Things, Jenny LeClue - Detectivu, The Signifier

I would say replaying it is essential to (fully) understanding the mystery. Which is one reason I’m not a huge fan, because I don’t think games should need replaying.
Make your choices wisely, is all I can say.

The game is quite complete on each play through, however if you don’t choose wisely certain scenes won’t play.
The game does have multiple endings so replaying the game is useful to see all the endings.

I can understand your reasoning but I’ve used to playing VNs that often require completing several routes before one can even enter into the route, so sometimes I do enjoy a replay. But I don’t mean to say it’s always a good thing - splitting any game into routes and/or spreading important info so that replays are required. Will see what I think about it in this game.
Make your choices wisely, is all I can say.
Never!

I’m playing Doki Doki Literature Club on my Switch and it’s this way. You MUST play it through several times to get the true or real ending.
However, this game does not require replays to get to the real ending, but you might want to replay it to get all the endings.

At the same time I am playing this game, I’m playing Dark Nights with Poe and Monroe. They make a great combination, although if I had the choice I’d play Dark Nights first, then the Shapeshifting Detective.
Maybe next year sometime I’ll give that a try.
Anyway, would anyone be interested in a playthrough of Dark Nights with Poe and Monroe after this CPT? Could be fun…..

that sounds like the adventure game equivalent of speedballing, Adv_Lvr!
I think I solved the first puzzle. Either that or I circumvented it. Now I’m risking my eternal soul by means of Tarot.
Interesting game.
It’s time people. You have until Tuesday, April 5th to reach:
20:00 - Dead Cert
When you see that appear on the screen, stop.
Of course, comments on what you think of the game are much appreciated.

I’m already at the new stopping point.
I know a little more about a lot of stuff.
I got a warning of some sorts that my abilities will run out. But it’s not really an option using them sparingly… I’ve already been “stuck” a bit, so what else is there to do than try out different faces?
I didn’t really get the soft porn vibes until now. Lexie definitely is flirting with us but she’s kind of goofy. But then we meet the photographer. Just ugh.
The boyfriend is a little shit. Probably has nothing to do with the murder, though.
For some reason I really find Bronwyn likeable. I bet that’s the game’s point, but her face is just so.. likeable.
It feel still very early to give any real judgement about the game. The feelings are positive enough to be interested in other D’Avekki games or Contradiction. So far I haven’t played any of them.

If you like the Shapeshifting Detective, I’d look into Contradiction too. It’s very good and of the same quality as this game. I highly recommend it.

Sorry, we haven’t started yet, but will catch up asap.
Currently translating Strangeland into Spanish. Wish me luck, or send me money to my Paypal haha
I was going to leave the first session until the last day, which meant that in my mind, I still had yesterday evening to do so… and then we got the go-ahead for the next session just as I was about to start the first…
Anyway, I started playing last night and have now reached the second stopping point.
First impressions: it feels a bit like a command-style adventure game that progresses just by trying everything on everything. Or in this case: being everyone and speaking to everyone.
The acting and writing are good enough and the story is pretty intriguing.
I loved the start. First line you say and you get something of a game over and restart.
It kinda sets the mood, as does the rather entertaining “Dark Nights with Poe and Munro” radio show (which I listen to each hour until it repeats).
And I absolutely *love* Rupert Booth in this. There’s just something fascinating about his face, voice and expressions. That was already obvious in Contradiction, but even more so here.
I miss the manually moving from place to place that Contradiction had. Here you just click a person or location and you immediately go there. But I like that just a few seconds of idling shows some different shots and angles of the location you’re in. That at least makes it more dynamic.
So far a decent game, and I’m intrigued to find out more about this “traveller”.
I mostly suspect Violet and Zak at the moment. They’re both creepier than the tarot readers.
Curious to see how things will unfold.
The truth can’t hurt you, it’s just like the dark: it scares you witless but in time you see things clear and stark. - Elvis Costello
Maybe this time I can be strong, but since I know who I am, I’m probably wrong. Maybe this time I can go far, but thinking about where I’ve been ain’t helping me start. - Michael Kiwanuka

Agree. (I don’t listen to the show all through, but I enjoy the bits I do listen to.)

I also listen to the “Dark Nights with Poe and Monroe” show, they really add to the creepy atmosphere of the game. The game is one of my favorite FMV games and one I love replaying.
