Questions About the Return of Shadowgate

Looking back on previous posts…

...looks like when I said “get in on”, I was wondering if AG was interested in Shadowgate. (but maybe it didn’t quite come across that way) But currently, not sure if AG is or isn’t interested.  Can’t quite tell.

Although, KickStarter is going to be a new norm in the coming future, and personally, I feel it must be accepted and welcomed as a new regular part of the game industry.  I could go on about KickStarter for hours and hours, but since I’ll save that for another thread.  Maybe I’ll make one here to discuss the role of KickStarter in the game industry now and going forward.

Might be fun!  Smile

Of course we’re interested in the project itself, if indeed it comes to pass. The issue is whether we’re interested in using our news to help promote yet another fundraising campaign, and that’s an entirely different animal. In general, I’m very reluctant to do so (both in principle, and in practice, being largely a one-man news team with extremely limited time).

You… you don’t think Shadowgate is a major new game announcement?  That hurts.  Frown

A remake isn’t a new game, no. Ports and re-releases and remakes and “reimaginings” are nice, but none of them are the same as a new, original project.

It’s already accepted and welcomed, and I’ve written an article on the subject myself. That doesn’t mean it’s the media’s job to become lapdogs for anyone and everyone looking for a handout. There still needs to be a distinction between “news” and “promotion”.

It’s all news to me, especially as the original was a classic and I wouldn’t have known about the remake without this thread. News which is clearly promotion annoys me a lot, but I don’t think this necessarily has to fall into that category.

It depends how it’s written, I think. All the news headlines on the main page could be considered promotion in some way, and many of them are given a positive spin.

I think this would make for an excellent topic of discussion in a thread of its own.  I’m glad it got brought up here, but I don’t want to derail the thread off (too much) from Shadowgate (what with it being what the thread’s about and all…)  Anyone want to get that thread going?  I’d definitely chime in on it, but I feel like starting the thread myself would be tooting my own platinum horn.

I am glad to hear from him, since that let me contact Dave & Karl who will now be contacting him to establish a connection.  Smile

considering you came here posing as somebody looking for more information on the project, when you were actually much more involved, yes i think you should abstain from further horn tooting Wink
The site has consistently stayed away from promoting remake kickstarters. Thats their prerogative, and one i can get behind as completely new games need the promotion help more (see: hero-u). Theres also usually more to discuss with totally new games. I think it does certainly warrant some coverage at some point, macventures are a part of adventure-history. But they didnt cover the LSL kickstarter either, and i cant blame them for it.

I actually tried that approach after hearing about Dave’s experience during the Sherlock Holmes KickStarter back in March & April.  He went to forums and told people about how he had a KickStarter and wanted to spread the word, and people actually ATTACKED him for it!  I believe one of the most vicious responses he got was on the Rock, Paper, Shotgun forums (if I remember correctly).

So the subterfuge was to try and pique interest without being wide open to attack from some people who have a major grudge against KickStarter and people using it (for reasons I still can’t quite understand).

However, I came to a quick realization that subterfuge is not my thing.  I am BAD at it.  Like REAL bad!  And as opposed to what happened before, the fact that I knew details and other behind the scenes stuff and could answer questions actually became somewhat of a positive thing.

Which was a HUGE relief on my part!

Still, that attempt at subterfuge is a bit of a stinger for me, and for that I apologize.  I’m still kind of new at the whole “Official Unofficial Community Manager” thing, but I’m starting to get the hang of it.  Some places aren’t letting me off the hook about trying to be under cover though… the MSPaint Adventure forums are still trying to figure if I’m really good at what I do or really bad at it.  They aren’t quite sure.  (Fits right in with the Paradoxical nature of HomeStuck though.)

Anyway, far be it from me to try and change or challenge the way things are done around here.  I’m more interested in working WITH news outlets instead of against them.  I’m well aware that some have some specific policies in regards to KickStarter, and now that I have a better idea of how AdventureGamers.com works, I’m happy to play by their rules.

I’ve already contacted Dave to get in touch with the Editor-In-Chief here to try and build better communications.  Hopefully as we talk here, those very communications are going on right now!  Smile

Meanwhile, now that Halloween’s over, it’s time to re-double our efforts and hit that 50% mark so we can shoot forward to 100%!  I want to get there ASAP so we can talk about the stretch goals; some that might even involve the other MacVenture games!

Hey, we found a way to try and convince GOG.com to carry the original MacVenture games!  Through the “Community Wishlist”, registered GOG.com members can vote on classic PC/Mac games to let GOG.com know which ones they want to see next!

All you need is to have a GOG.com account (Free and doesn’t cost anything if you don’t have one already), go to this link here:

GOG.com Community Wishlist - Shadowgate

And click the vote button!

Easy as that!  This will be a big help for the new Shadowgate and for reviving the MacVentures!  Zojoi wants to see this happen, and I imagine you guys do too!  Think you can take a minute to vote?  Smile

HOLY CARP!

Shadowgate’s #3 in GOG.com’s Community Wishlist of Most Votes Gained in the Past Week!

It’s sitting right behind Grim Fandango!  That’s amazing!

GOG.com’s Community Wishlist

Now hopefully this should get GOG’s attention so the original versions of Shadowgate can go up on them!  That would be a huge boost to the campaign!

The “new” GOG is really annoying, it’s insane that they didn’t immediately accept the original MacVentures for distribution on their portal. I see this more and more now, devs wanting their old games on GOG, but GOG for some reason being reluctant. It feels like they’ve changed in the past year, and not for the better.

Anyway, I feel the campaign is going a bit more slowly than I’d wish, but that is actually true for every single Kickstarter-campaign I’m currently backing (and there’s a few of them). Looks like there are a bit too many “big” campaigns on KS at the moment.

It’s the final week of the campaign, so it’s now or never!

Anyone that’s been on the fence may as well decide right about now since we’re going into the last 7 days with a little more than 25% left to go!

I think it can happen, so I encourage everyone to please check out the campaign page here:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/zojoi/shadowgate

And share it with as many folks as possible!

If you use Facebook, we’re also trying to get the word out more there too, so anyone who can “Like” and “Share” this post here:

http://www.facebook.com/zojoigame/posts/440340962692538

Would be helping out a lot!  Thank you very much!

I want to see Shadowgate and the other MacVentures brought back, including the never before released MacVenture version of Beyond Shadowgate, the official sequel!

Hey, check this out!

Dave Marsh & Karl Roelofs, the creators of Shadowgate, are doing a live Reddit IAMA session right now!  (11/21/2012)  They’re live from 8 PM - 11 PM EST, and they can be found here:

Anyone got any questions to ask them?  They can be asked here!  Smile
