Adventure Game Scene of the Day — Wednesday 28 November 2012
I’m usually not much for low-res, amateur games, and AGS is the worst piece of software in the history of mankind (someone should tell Wadjet Eye that), but I got dragged into playing 5 Days A Stranger some years ago when we did a community playthrough of the game. I thought it was okay-ish, I guess, though that did not make me play the later instalments.
I remember that the biggest mystery of all was what all these people were eating when the only food in the house was a big bag of salt.
Passing over how wrong you are about AGS I really liked this game for a one man indie effort and consider it’s price tag of £0 fully justified!

Never played this one. If I found myself with copious amounts of time I’d rather plough through the rather tall pile of pre-AGS classic games I haven’t got around to playing rather than the “neo-retro classics” like this.

Actually, I think it’s the reason why adventure games kept the flame when everyone thought they’re done for. I remember when I found AGS site seeing how many games people make, I stopped worrying about adventures being dead.

I found 5 Days A Stranger few years ago by chance. I think It has a very good game design, I don’t find that easily.
5 Days is great - but each game in the series gets better and better!
I only ever read about people complaining about the lo-res style of adventure games on this website. The rest of the universe is much more approving thankfully. I’ve been meaning to play this… but after I’ve finished the Blackwell games.
I love low-res graphics, when they’re done well (Fester Mudd, Resonance) they take me back to the glorious days where adventuregames had the recognition they deserved, which makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.
I also remember when I discovered AGS back in the day, and it did for sure inject some hope to the desperation I felt regarding the genre dying. A friend and myself started making our own adventure games, but I remember my index finger kept cramping up from drawing all the artwork with a mouse(!)^^, and I put it all on hold when I learned about the existence of drawing tablets. I didn’t get to the step of actually buying one myself untill quite recently, when I bought a Wacom tablet. Now, with renewed inspiration from Bill Tillers artwork I plan on getting right back to it, though it seems photoshop and a tablet can take quite a while getting used to, the feel is just so different from pencil and paper, though it’s a considerable improvement to the mouse.
Kuru, what software would you recommend over AGS?

Dag: Personally I prefer working with Visionaire, which is what’s used for games such as Deponia.
In it you script with the well-known LUA scripting system which is very easy and intuitive to get into.

I’ve been doing some research, and from what I can tell, the leading softwares today are AGS, Wintermute and Visionaire. I would probably have gone back to AGS since I used to know it quite well, but it’s been over ten years (or so) since I used it, and I would probably have to learn everything from the beginning anyway, so I might aswell try something different. Visionaire looks fresh and up to date, and it seems like a lot of the annoyances I experienced with AGS is improved with Visionaire.
I started out by reading about it in the AGS forums, and judging from what I read there, Visionaire (and its community(!) is utter crap, and AGS is the best thing in the world! However, it didn’t take long to figure out that (most of) the AGS-users were being totally biased, so I headed for some more neutral grounds. After reading a few more “neutral” reviews and comparisons between the 3 engines, it became clear that Visionaire must be the right software for what I’m envisioning. The only thing AGS seems to “do better” is being free
Downloading the trial version now, and looking very much forward to getting into it. I’m wondering though, how far can the trial version get me? Can you make a full game with it? Don’t get me wrong, if I enjoy using it, I will most definitely buy it, I’m just curious.

You can do everything in the trial except publish your project (as far as I’m aware anyway - I haven’t found any sign of things left out. The other two options are solely there to allow you to publish)
And even if you’re going for a Steam release and what not, 1.000 dollars is quite cheap for a license. And the indie license is chump change really.
Community-wise I don’t know how Visionaire is. I haven’t used it at all except for reading the intro tutorial when I started out that a user had made.
