IMMORTALITY by Sam Barlow
25 April 2023 11:27 AM
Chrissie’s comment elsewhere about IMMORTALITY deserving its own thread prompted me to start a new thread. I would love to discuss this complex, multilayered game. Too bad it’s not at all suitable for a CPT, but as some regulars said they might or will be playing it in the near future I will wait to see if others want to post their questions and comments here before I post my own.

Thanks Karlok for initiating the thread. I have dabbled a little with the game but have left it alone for the time being.
I’m sure I’m not the only one that needs some help with at least the interface to start with & hope to post my thoughts about it in the next few days.

I won’t be able to give my two euro cents until I play the game, and that may take a while.
It could always be worse, remember that.

Chrissie, I’ll try to help you with your interface problem if I can. Are you using your new controller?
One very general hint to people who haven’t played Sam Barlow’s previous games: I’ve watched parts of two playthroughs and both made the same mistake of not rewinding scenes. You find new scenes by clicking on a person or an object in the current scene. Say you click on a key. The game will show you the same or another key in a different scene. But more often than not that’s right in the middle of the new scene. So always rewind or you may miss important info.
@zobraks: no problem, nobody should feel obliged to participate.

Interface problem? (Special?) Controller?
What exactly (meaning what hardware thingamajigs that don’t come with a good plain 2015 PC) do I need to play Immortality?
I’ve never owned a joystick.

Zobraks, you don’t have to use any newfangled thingamajigs. Just mouse + keyboard. I played it on my 7-year old PC. But a controller would make playing this particular game a bit easier.

Thanks Karlok, I want to finish The Safe Place first & then dabble some more with Immortality to see what I specifically need help with before coming back to you.
I wasn’t planning to use the controller but I’ve just seen your post so yes, if you think it would make playing the game easier.

Charophycean - 26 April 2023 06:31 AMI wonder if adventure gamers in the 80s would have thought the genre would evolve from the 9 verb interface to đšī¸
Early Sierra games supported IBM analog joysticks which was especially useful in Manhunter games (1988/1989) that made use of a smart cursor, but had no mouse support. This is something I learned just recently at The Adventurer’s Guild blog where they are playing and rating games based on various criteria.
PC means personal computer

My daughter has all kinds of controllers so I may give it a go if the game is worth it.
Charophycean - 26 April 2023 06:31 AMIt’s evolution, baby.
I’m at the lowest step of it (as far as gaming is concerned).

Only for zobraks: The controller will vibrate whenever the rumbling sounds start that I mentioned earlier. That’s what I read anyway, I don’t have a controller. You decide whether you need one. But I think developer Sam Barlow also recommended using a controller.

If there will be some sort of spontaneous playthrough, I’ll join in out of sheer curiosity. This doesn’t seem to be a game I’d usually go for, but it sure is unique.

I saw that, thank you. Spontaneous playthroughs we had here are slightly different though - everyone plays at their own pace and stops wherever they feel like. Some people play faster, some slower, some end on a completely different point than others, but the main thing is that we all play the same game concurrently and are able to exchange opinions and expressions about the whole process (not tied to a strict stopping point).
When we played Heroine’s Quest this way, for example, we chose different classes of heroes, so our playthroughs were wildly different from each other - some areas were available only to specific classes, and many problems and overall game progress heavily depended on the skills hero possessed - meaning we approached problems drastically different and in a asynchronous order. Personally, I found that fun, because we still played the same game and had lots of things to discuss. Maniac Mansion playthrough was of similar nature, so my offer still stands.
