the new freeware thread
Hahaha ... that’s what I need yet another decent looking freeware game. Thanks for the hook VP I am checking it out
Half romance, half horror, The Doll Shop will let you choose your fate.
But maybe you’re already doomed…
Doll Shop is a free adventure game(*) written and designed by Atelier Sentô, based on memories of their life in the Japanese countryside.
The graphics were hand-painted with watercolors by students, in 3 days (January 10, 12 and 13, 2018), during a workshop at ECV art school in Bordeaux, France.
Learn more about the making of the game: ateliersento.com/dollshop

* maybe more visual novel with AG and “art game” elements
Not as much into the visual novels, but I will check it out thanks!
Those graphics look like The Coral Cave!

Never mind…
The truth can’t hurt you, it’s just like the dark: it scares you witless but in time you see things clear and stark. - Elvis Costello
Maybe this time I can be strong, but since I know who I am, I’m probably wrong. Maybe this time I can go far, but thinking about where I’ve been ain’t helping me start. - Michael Kiwanuka

haha wow, i was completely oblivious to The Coral Cave, thanks for calling it out!

They had a thread here with artwork that just screamed “Studio Ghibli” but in watercolor. I love the art style.

quick shout out to https://store.steampowered.com/app/1975120/The_Lost_Dachshund/
it’s a short, sweet kind of game, i imagine some people around here might appreciate it.
edit: It’s about 10 to 15 minutes, it has a photo realistic+ graphics (filters, little effects), voiced (British) narration and a good variety of rather straight forward puzzles.
not sure if it will make my personal top 3 for the freeware aggies - there’s a couple of games i really want to check out before i vote and it has some solid competition - but i think it’s a standout game (that might get overlooked).
I can second ‘The Lost Dachshund’ as a decent lunch break type game. Made me chuckle a bit
nice.
i just got to the end in https://kremlebot.itch.io/dads-dont-die and it resonated with me.
again, a game with fairly simple puzzles (one requires you to be able to hear) and as such it probably won’t end up in my top 3, but it’s very well made.
a close to perfect execution of a short story-type of game that does a lot with a little.

Just another reason to hate Steam. All I wanted to do was download the game. But Steam wants to update the client. And then it doesn’t like your old password. Ad Infinitum. I thought this game would be a short and fun game. I’m a cocker fan myself. But steam just gets in the way.
For whom the games toll,
they toll for thee.
Technology is a boom ... but can also be a bust. Gotta just push though!

It isn’t necessarily the answer you are looking for, but the game is also available on Google Play for Android devices.

Anyway, by saying Steam “doesn’t like your old password”, do you mean you have to re-enter it to access? If you mean literally that it prompts you to change your password, that sounds very strange. Steam has never done that to me, ever.
Steam has been doing some annoying update and account-related stuff the past couple of years. I do prefer itch.io and GoG.
Not sure if any comparable service is going to break Steam’s grip on the digital distribution market, with steam keys being sold on a plethora of sites. I follow Epic Games Launcher with some curiosity. Mostly because of another fellow called Tim (Sweeney).
one final shout out before i actually post a list of 3 games in the appropriate thread: https://barryk013.itch.io/elsewhere-express
a beautiful ride on a fantasy train. it’s pretentious, but done right. i’d describe it as a casual conversation simulator with a surreal atmosphere. it kept me interested, but gameplay-wise: you will need to read a lot of dialogue in order to read more dialogue. what you get out of that depends on.. vibes, i guess?
i hope i don’t sound to harsh (or reductionist, to be vp pretentious) - it’s a stand out game. not for everyone, to be sure, but if you can read my description and still want to give it a go - you might be open-minded in just the right way to enjoy this ride.
Ah, I wasn’t able to play anything in the past week. Thanks for the mini-reviews, VP, I’ll try to do those titles as soon as I can!
PC means personal computer
tres cool! i noticed the screenshots got lost, i might fix it. depending on the way things are going, i might make it a monthly selection with mini-descriptions/reviews.
for this occasion, a couple of potential winners/more traditional AG entries:
https://illiteratecodegames.itch.io/powers-in-the-basement
a fairly long* game with a very classic comedy adventure sensibility - think Simon the Sorcerer, Secret-era Guybrush. It also has graphics reminiscent of that era - i think they’re really well done, but they’re obviously pixelated.
* the page says 5/6 hours, i’d say it’s more like an hour, maybe two.
https://lorenzob.itch.io/clotilde2 i still need to play this one. not sure, but it looks fun. i think this screenshot is incredibly good:
https://standoffsoftware.itch.io/the-gay-agenda is fully voiced, full of puns, classic AG comedy with a satirical bent.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1937840/Stargazing_Genesis/ - the SubMachine/Cube Escape format has become a bit of a staple - which is good, i think: clear, stark design, ideal for puzzles. This is about an hour long, again on the easy side. I’d say this borrows a little too much from the aforementioned series, but it has a couple of nice puzzles and i like the music.
