Adventure Game Scene of the Day — Tuesday 12 August 2014
This is the dragon-branding scene from Manhunter 2: San Francisco (1989), an adventure I wouldn’t mind replaying. In those days I was a devoted Sierra fan and I bought both Manhunter games when they were released. It was my first gaming experience with ripped throats and other gruesome deaths. Looking at the ancient blocky graphics now, it’s hard to imagine I found them revolting at the time and even daunting when I had to zoom in on another dead body. I’m pretty sure I could not have handled a Cat Lady back then.
I enjoyed the game in spite of the gore and the action bits. Some arcade sequences were even fun. I loved the MAD system of tracking suspects and victims. A novel way to open up locations and tell a story. Haven’t seen anything like it since.

ripped throats and other gruesome deaths… blocky graphics…
gore and the action bits… arcade sequences… Sierra…
Urgh.
Thanks, but no, thanks.
It could always be worse, remember that.

Here, just for you. It’s not too bad, is it? I must have been a different person in 1989.

Was the Simpsons around in 1989? Sierra should sue them for stealing Manhunter’s skin tone.

Thank you.

Blech.

Nah, they made their TV debut in Tracey Ullman’s show, a couple of years before.

The funny thing is, Manhunter 1 skin actually looked pretty good. Wonder why they changed to that terrible shade of yellow?

They’re Chinese! Dragon, pigtail and all.
The yellow is pretty strong, but so are the other colors.
PS: The game features a laundry too…

Right, Chinese with cyan eyes. Now I’ve seen it all.

I’m sorry, I didn’t realize you demanded photorealism from Sierra. This one better? He’s alive too.
I wouldn’t want to upset Zobraks more than absolutely necessary.

love this game, playing for the Invaders Orbs favor, was more than getting me good, I remember Newyork was a shock for me, in good way(needed to explain that)
SF was a little bit harsh with the arcades and sudden non explained deaths .
I didn’t mind the action bits so much. Killing rats was satisfying. Manhunter New York had the terrible knife game I couldn’t seem to win.

First screenshot…
Fu Manchu already has a load of ninja, so the two jawas are told to leave.

Are there other Adventure games set in San Francisco?
Lots!
- The Tex Murphy games. An imaginary San Francisco in the 2040s.
- Bad Mojo , but you don’t get to see much of SF.
- Golden Gate is a 1st-person game, entirely based in SF, uses photographs of real SF locations. An oldie, unlike the others not available on Steam or GOG. Probably hard to find.
- SFPD Homicide: Case File Body in the Bay, also photographs and FMV, also probably hard to find.
- 1954: Alcatraz.
