The black one will allegedly only have a limited run, after that it'll take Premium's place (and supposedly price point) and return to white.

Apart from the introduction of the Elite model, it's rumored the price of the Core model will be cut to $220.

Well it's good to know you can at least still upgrade the Core's HDD for the more demanding games.

I'm interested in the timeline here: when is the premium due to be replaced by the elite? I ask because of two reasons: one is that the elite will most likely only be sold in the States, and two is that it's too expensive for my tastes. It is to be expected that when the role of premium is assumed, the normal cost is usurped as well. Which is the top I'm willing to pay.

And Flux, I doubt it will ever replace the premium. Microsoft likes the price advantage it has over Sony.

Here is the summary of everything that's known at this point.

Prices may remain the same with the 120GB / HDMI hardware upgrade in the Premium Xbox, but we may still see a price cut on the line when 65nm chips start shipping.
That's a pretty vague statement. Which price stays the same? The current Premium one or the new Elite one?

But the timeframe is clarified now: a bit after the Elite is sold out it'll replace the Premium.

Unrelated to that, I wonder how Ben's doing. Tempsie, too.

Well, back on topic...

Italy couldn't wait. They started selling the damned things before the launch date.

The Crystal xbox was sold in the UK too. So I think there is a posibility of this being in the PAL regions too.

Australian PS3 launch underwhelming | Joystiq.com, Mar 22nd 2007 7:30PM

Quote:
Today is tomorrow in Australia. Not just is it tomorrow, but it's coming on noon. According to The Sydney Morning Herald the PlayStation 3 launched last night with "officials, media and security outnumbering customers." The 500 retailers on the continent opened their doors for a midnight launch and despite the estimated 20,000 pre-orders "most stores were virtually deserted."

The Herald says even the official launch event at Myer's Pitt Street store had only 40 people in line at midnight "causing distress for the army of camera crews who turned up expecting to capture launch mayhem." The gentlemen who ended up being first in line showed up at 9 PM. Adding insult to injury, television producers "unashamedly" had the crowd fake cheer for the cameras. A local radio station even had their on-air talent create "bogus cheers" to convince listeners that a major event was going on. Looks like the hype accompanying the U.S. launch has all but vanished. We'll get a better picture of the PS3 PAL release later this evening when reports of the European launch trickle in. Maybe the land down under is just full of Xbox and Nintendo fanboys?
Crunchy, you got any firsthand accounts?

Australian PS3 Launch Shindig | Kotaku.com, 3/22/07

11:00pm - It all starts going a little bit wrong. You see, for security purposes, crash barriers
have been erected in front of the Casino Royale screen, in order to best herd the hordes of expected
customers up the escalators towards their waiting PS3s. Except...nobody is here. It's an hour before
kick-off, and there's probably 40 people in line. Another twenty and they might outnumber
the media in attendance.

Quote:
12:07 - Nothing more to see here. The crowd is probably at around 80 or so which, for the official PS3 launch in Australia's biggest city, was a piss-poor turnout. Already the barriers and screen outside are being dismantled, and as Danny rushes home to play some VF5 I'm off to bed.

Final thoughts? Last night was a bust (and not just at the official launch). Sony put on a good show, but I don't think they, or Myer, had readied themselves for the fact nobody wanted to come. Midnight launches just aren't as popular in Australia as they are in other places (it's the apathy, you see), and when you throw in the fact the PS3 has come in on the back of 5 months of bad press (including the local media) and costs AUD$1000 (which is a significant psychological barrier) the turnout was about what I was expecting.

Still, this is only the first night of thousands that this thing will be on sale. I'd expect a few to be sold today and over the weekend as people do their shopping in regular, human hours, so it'd be unfair to pass judgement on the "launch" as whole until the GfK figures come in sometime next week.

Going just on last night, though? I'm hesitant to use the word disaster, but it's not the best start for the PS3 down under.

Well honestly, Sony took the piss out of the PS3 all on its own.

...and yea Uncharted looks awesome. Moreso that sooner they're done with it, Naughty Dog can get me some next-gen Jak...

Oh hell, there is no limit how far Sony will go to make people buy a PS3...

So? They probably aren't the first company to do something like that.

I think I agree with Rob on this one. This thread has become an excuse to point out every little thing that Sony does (or you all think they're doing) wrong.

yeah, because the people lined up for a launch party weren't going to buy a ps3 until sony anounced they'll get free TV's as well.
