vegemite
Shit. I'm addicted to it now, thanks to Richard. Slathered on toasted bread or English muffin with butter. Just finished one.

i pick up a canister of vegemite whenever I can afford it
it's definitely an acquired taste. .. everyone I know hates it. I think it's because most americans expect something to be sweet when it's put on toast and are shocked when it's incredibly salty. i also love the fact that it's technically resin scraped from beer barrels.. best invention ever "Hey! See that slime in those barrels? Lets eat it and see if we die or not" |

I've never actually tried it, but i've been warned many times of it's.....flavor. Not sure about your theory of americans expecting something sweet. Most of us put butter on toast, and that's salty, but you may be right, since other than butter, we mostly put pb, jelly, cinnamon and other such sweet things on it.

I can't remember the name of it but back where I used to live I would sometimes be able to get a tube of fish paste from my Swedish friends when they'd return from going home in the summer. It tasted very fishy, and I would love eating it on toast. Mm Mmm!

An Aussie friend of mine says the trick to eating Vegemite is to use it very sparingly. Just spread about half the amount of Vegemite as you would butter, and it's not bad.
I haven't tried it yet, but since I like most other salty or savory flavors, I'll probably like Vegemite as well. ScottMate

Then I tasted the vegemite. It was good, very good. I said, "This shit's NOTHING compared to bagoong, which is LETHALLY salty, it's made of shrimp paste and you use it sparingly." After seeing me gobble down another slice of toast with at least five times the amount his put on his, I watched his jaw drop.

While I do love men at work, it's not enough to get me to eat that garbage.

I recently saw an interview on Australian TV with Jenna (of Survivor All Star fame) who was offered a taste of vegemite on toast. She looked at it and said "ooh, it's like chocolate spread" and stuffed a whole knife full directly into her mouth. Hilarity ensued...
Although I've been in Australia for about 15 years now, I still haven't acquired a taste for vegemite, and maintain a strong preference for my homeland's Marmite (My Mate!). Australian Promite, however, is pretty damn fine. |

What are "Marmite" and "Promite"?

Where does one acquire this vegemite? I've tasted it before and liked it... but I never know where to buy it.

Marmite (the UK version) is "tangier" than vegemite, and slightly less like a paste (somewhere between vegemite and treacle as far as texture goes). Difficult to describe the flavour, but it's sort of spicy compared to vegemite, which I find a little bland (apologies to all the Marmite aficionados that are appalled by my poor description). Promite is Australian and is very similar to Vegemite, just a little difference in flavour. Promite's better if you ask me, but I guess it's all a matter of personal taste (or lack thereof). |
