I've never actually tried it, but i've been warned many times of it's.....flavor. Not sure about your theory of americans expecting something sweet. Most of us put butter on toast, and that's salty, but you may be right, since other than butter, we mostly put pb, jelly, cinnamon and other such sweet things on it.
