Is that a charcoal rendering? Lovely tonal range and depth.

I keep meaning to do life drawing again. It'd be good for me.

It's graphite. Back then I used to use a shitload of various pencils and things. Nowadays I stick to really thick graphite sticks*. The second one is oil on raw canvas, not gessoed, but covered with acrylic matte medium. I was afraid it would peel off, but it isn't.

*) Like so (this is a pretty mediocre one):

You know, that's actually pretty good. The pose isn't uniform (good), the proportions are just about right and despite a little mirroring in the arms I really like the detail in the hands - they look interesting.

Don't lie - you do art or at least enjoy it. If not then you should do some more!

hey thanks!

my first attempt at a comic is featured on my web-site (see sig), which was done last year for a vis comm assignment for school....

yeah, proportions are my weakest skill, artistically... do you know of any good sites or references with tips on setting them up correctly?

i seem to find it hard to focus on the entire picture i'm doing all at once....

Had the same problem.. What might help, is to first sketch out the whole figure with quick&loose strokes.. that way you'll have the solid basic construction and pose for your character down and it will be much easier to add details later.

One of the more useful things i got out of classes, were those quick-sketching lessons: there was a model and you were given aroun 10 minutes to draw her/him.. then you did it again, but you had only 5 min., then 1 min., 30 seconds and in the end 10 secons. It was a great practise.. as you started out very stiff, but less time there was more loosen your strokes became..

Igor's right. Construction comes from creating the shapes first. In animation all characters are broken down into simple shapes for all artists to easily recreate.

Considering you drew it without constructing it first in lines, that's pretty impressive.

thanks for the feedback!

actually, i did sort of set it up using lines... in my mind. thing is, for that comic-book project i did last year i practised doing this one type of body construction over and over again - it was your basic comic book super hero type thing....

anyhoo, now, whenever i try to stray from that basic shape it turns out looking a bit funny... my ultimate goal is to be able to visualise and construct any sort of shape i want, in any position without it simply looking like a simple variation on the super hero type thing!

hmmm..... i guess it really comes down to one thing in the end: practise, practise!

Things I draw in half an hour are always superior to things I work on for two and a half.

Rat in Tutu

This I drew after reading "The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents" by Terry Pratchett. Those who read the book know why I drew this.

I had to look at the cover a bit (the Rats), to get it completely right. But the rest is done by me.

I draw very rarely, maybe once or twice a year. Made this one a few days ago.

The image quality is crappy because it was taken with my cell phone.
Anyway, it's just the first scetch, I'll have to redraw it (hence all the little arrows pointing at things that need redoing).

Nice line, pose and structure. Is there something you're not telling us, Trep?
