On some forums you can click on the number in the poll and a little window pops up that tells you the usernames of the people that voted for that option. That would be a cool addition...

Oh BWT- Nice image Jake, that rocks

The user can chose whether or not their poll will disclose who voted for what. If you look around at past polls on this forum you'll discover that some have public results and some have private.

I am in a really crappy mood for a number of reasons, and unbelievably, that graphic brought a smile to my face. Thanks, Jake.

Whoever said it is right - this belongs in Forum Feedback. And in a second, that's where it'll be. (And all of our post counts will go up!)

I would love to have an age-restriction put in on these forums. At the same time, though, I can see that this would limit our already small community from growing.

Considering how young at least some of us were when we started posting here, or on similar forums, I would feel like a pretty big ass for wanting an age restriction.

Speaking of, has anyone else seen that picture of Marek taken around the time he was running his Plunder Island site?

Gawd, I'm always going to be one of the oldest around, aren't I? When I was that age the internet didn't even EXIST yet.

Do you remember Prodigy?

...didn't think so.

I do. I remember using Prodigy. How did people survive back then without today's technology?

I remember Prodigy, and CompuServ, and ... Delphi or something like that. I remember thinking they were very ugly looking, but probably awesome. I also remember my parents not wanting to pay for accounts on any of them either, or a modem Until we got AOL about a year after I got MI2.

Ohmygosh . . . Memory lane city. Freshman year this is what I had instead of the internet, and I could type about ten lines' worth of text to my parents in any given message. For some reason I actually WANTED to write to them instead of doing all the stuff normal people do in college, so my roommate was constantly nagging at me to get off the telephone line. The other option was go to the computer center and use the internet, which was in its total infancy and which was so clunky nobody understood what it was. It was kind of like programming in Basic just to send an email. Which was pointless anyway, because nobody had email, except a few other college students.

But everything is better now and happy and joyful and I spend my time getting and sending thousands of emails a day, so the world is a good place.

Oops, why did we move this out of chitchat?

Back on topic, even though some of the language or discussions in the forum are adult, I still think asking people's age is a problem. It might depend; I don't know how some of the commercially available screening programs work (does anyone?) but for all we know we're already inaccessible to kids whose parents are super-concerned about this stuff. Would adding a request for a minimum age make a difference to any of these programs? That issue aside, I still think in general the decision should be case-by-case. Quite frankly, I doubt a ton of really young kids would WANT to hang around the forums, and I don't see a problem with mid- to late- teens doing so--they can contribute a great deal. Not much to be gained by forcing them to tell a lie, even a white-ish one, to get access.

Our parents must be of the same ilk. We only ever logged on to Prodigy so I could get a hint on whatever game I was playing at the time, and my dad was always there over my shoulder telling me where to click so we could find the hint that much faster. I was all agast and wanting to explore and he kept going "Click there! Game hints! Don't you see?!"

Bah. I still have nightmares about it.

How's about banning people who act like children, whether they actually are children or not? You know, kind of like we currently do...

I was 15 when I first started posting on forums, and I typed and acted exactly as I do now, which I like to think is maturely and sensibly. Deciding 'being child = being childish' would be rather unfair on the countless number of sensible kids out there.

:p

They probably won't. I don't think vB recalculates post counts on thread moves. I could always manually run the postcount sync script, though. Which I will do
