Anyone who wants more snow can come trade places with me. I've had just about all I can take for this winter, and I've probably got at least another month or so of it left. Yeah, it's a winter wonderland until it takes you an hour to get to work when it normally takes 20 minutes and the potholes that form swallow your car (if the salt doesn't rust it to nothing first). After 20+ years in this place you tend to not care anymore. Besides, it's not so pretty when it's all slushed up on the side of the road and nasty.

Also, I've actually heard that global warming will cause things to get colder (at least closer to the poles). Probably has something to do with everything melting and coming down here.

Thing is, we (UK) are sitting pretty much on the end of the Gulf Stream, so we rarely get snow because of this. Even though the UK and New York are pretty much on the same latitude, it is because of the Gulf Stream not hitting you guys that you always have nice, cold and white winters.
Sure, I dont drive so I can only begin to imagine the frustration snow can cause to you.

But you gotta love it

Bloody killjoy.

You carry on, Elton. As a Brummie, I remember all the snowless years - we had less than you lot farther north. (we definitely had more back in the 70's though).

And this was a great picture, so I'm posting it again for you.

I was right behind you, resting my lens on your shoulder. But you were so engrossed in taking your own picture that you never even noticed me.

Hey! I would have taken really scenic snow pics too - if it wasn't for the fact that I live in Lancaster on the north-west coast.

Well, when I lived close to Johannesburg, the locals had waited from 1954 to 1981 before they saw snow. To my knowledge they haven't seen any since 1981 either. That first Christmas BBQ we had by the pool in 34C searing heat felt real weird, believe me. And the winters are 95% sunny and dry.

Oh, I know, I'm just goofin'. No harm no foul, eh? This is just the time of year when it starts to drag on seemingly forever and I get extra bitter about it.

You gotta understand guys, Quad lives in Rochester, which is in upstate New York and it is an annual event there to get buried in snow in Winter. They have to deal with what they call lake effect snow. Lake Effect snow happens when a cold artic air mass rushes over the relatively warm water of the Great Lakes and as it makes land fall dumps a ton of snow. Lake effect snows are known to produce a foot of snow within a few hours. Unless you're a kid, there's really nothing romantic or fun about those.

Well, looks like the UK (especially the East) is set to receive a freezing air mass from Russia tonight through to Friday, bringing loads of snow!!

WOOHOO

ps: when you dont see snow often, its great to get it. It usually pisses it down here in Blighty

Nope! It's a long story, so in a very small nutshell - Thatcher destroyed my Dads job so we emigrated to South Africa (I was 14). Then 4 years later I was made an SA citizen so they could send me to the Namib desert in the SA Defence Force, but as a Brit I objected by returning to Old Blighty hastily (less than a week before I was supposed to board the train to the training camp). Then I played The Longest Journey, found AG and so moved to Munich. Been here 3 years now and intend to spend my life here. But I travel back to Brummagem every year to see my folks. Maybe we'll emigrate to New Zealand one day, who knows.

What he said. I live about 10 minutes from Lake Ontario, with traffic. And we shouldn't forget the random ice storms that bring just about everything to a halt every few years. Back in '91 my house was out of power for about a week because of all the trees that fell on the power lines. We were all but barricaded in our house because of all the debris on the road. It happened to a lesser extent a few years ago (not as many trees around this time). Anyone ever see an entire forest encased in ice? It is pretty cool, except when you realize the danger you're in from falling tree limbs. I should try and find the pics my fiancee took of the last one we had and post them.

edit: Actually, take a look at these. They're not mine, but you'll get the idea. Especially about the car encased in ice too. I totally forgot about that part. You should have seen me hack at that crap to get it off. He says he was done in 20 minutes... he made good time.

Also keep in mind that's downtown. I'm in the suburbs with many more trees.

edit again: more pics from other people...

Here's some from the '91 storm:

Do a Google search for Rochester Ice Storm and you'll find more. But these should give you a good idea.

I have to say Quad, I found that really interesting; I was never aware of such weather phenomenon.

Beautiful, yet dangerous at the same time. Funny how the weather works.

Thanks for the photos

Still no snow in the Seattle area, but a 2 hour drive away, and there I was, snowboarding, just two days ago!!! But even that snow was pretty scarce, as evidenced by my numerous bruises, which resulted from bodily contact with the hardened snow cover, and more importantly, the rocky soil underneath!

Any time Though the pictures give a pretty good idea of what happens, there's nothing like walking around in it. It's quite breathtaking. You just have to be careful where you step and be ready to react when you hear something snap. I remember the first storm I witnessed in '91, waking up in the middle of the night as trees were falling down all over the street. The racket it made was insane. I had no idea what was going on since it was dark. It sounded like a war was going on with things blowing up everywhere. I was all of 10 years old at that point. Wow, time flies!

But now I think people can begin to see why I'm not too fond of snow. What's a rare, calm dusting to many of you, is a daily hastle for me for 4-5 months. I laugh when states down south close schools because they get one inch of snow overnight. Try one foot in an hour, then we'll talk! Try walking to school in that when no one bothered to get up and plow the sidewalks. Okay, okay, I'll stop complaining now.
