Langen, the place where I live, has been first settled in 500-600 AD, and was first mentioned in 835 AD as "Langunon". It's even older than the castle ruin in the neighbouring town that I've mentioned before, which was first built (not as a castle, but a hunting lodge) in 950 AD.
We also have some very young towns in Germany, partly they're new settlements, others are relocated settlements, usually due to the original settlement being endangered by Lignite/Brown Coal strip mining. -

I live in Apeldoorn. According to Wikipedia, the oldest known reference to Apeldoorn, then called Appoldro, dates from the 8th century. A 1740 map refers to it as Appeldoorn.

Well, I'm not Wampanoag, so I couldn't actually accept the prize anyway...if there were a prize, I mean, other than satisfaction.
Since I can't get no satisfaction, I say congratulations to you, Trader. Now I'm off to decimate the weeds that are taking over my backyard. Grrrrr. |

Actually, if we're lisiting not-really-settled inhabitants of areas, the Neandertals in Germany existed as far back as 350,000 years ago.
Sure, the Neandertal is one state over from where I live, but like I said, they were not entirely settlements, and just because they found them there, doesn't mean they might not have travelled here. It's just a question about whether or not things have been preserved. -

If anyone is interested in finding out about their history [blood on mothers side] they should check out The National Geographics Genographic Project, I found it very interesting to see my history mapped out.

The town I live in now is about 600 years old. I'm originally from Swedens capital which is older (around 1000).

300th anniversary of the Dutch coming to the Tiwi Islands was just celebrated, I feel very proud to be part of the [one of] oldest living culture in the world.

It amuses me how we stole everything the Dutch ever found, New Amsterdam, Cape Colony, Australia, hehe. No hard feelings, guys.

New York is one of my favorite cities in the world, so I *am* a little proud we founded it, and it's too bad it had to lose its beautiful name, I give you that --Erwin

Hamilton, Ontario was founded shortly after the War of 1812. Prior to that, the Neutral Indians had been the first known settlers of the area, but they were driven off by the Iroquois. In 1784, United Empire Loyalists from the Thirteen Colonies settled the region. For a city that to this day inspires a mixture of awe and disdain from the surrounding cities, Hamilton has its charms. Sadly, it's somewhat backwards, and is only very slowly growing out of its heavily industrialized work economy. There's an element of hick mentality amongst a good portion of its citizens, and I find it strange that I've stayed this long, but seriously don't know if I could ever call any other city home.
