Sure. But those not only blend genres they sometimes also redefine the genres alone to the point when they barely resemble the initial thing. You can say that that's when the crossover stops being crossover - when all bonds with the original genres are broken and not translucent.

FNM and Incubus are definitely genre-breakers IMO.

Anyway, this is some of the music I love:

Dream Theater (excluding the newer stuff), Aerosmith (especially the 70's stuff), Jeff Buckley, Nine Inch Nails, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Extreme, Incubus (One of the VERY best bands of the moment), ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead (sick name, yes, but like Incubus, this is one of the best rock bands today. Also known simply as Trail Of Dead), Michael Jackson, Pearl Jam, Queen, Soundgarden, Spin Doctors (go ahead and laugh - I think they are/were fantastic), Megadeth, Spock's Beard, Neal Morse, Steve Vai, The Charlatans UK, Alice In Chains, Live, Nick Drake, Queensrÿche (well, Operation: Mindcrime mostly), The Who, Alanis Morissette (Jagged Little Pill is one of the best albums ever), The Beatles, 311, The Black Crowes, Jason Becker, Damien Rice, Genesis, Yes, Opeth, Seal, Machine Head, Peter Gabriel, Smashing Pumpkins, Metallica etc.

Pretty eclectic, but mostly just pure f'n rock.

Edit: typos

Incubus were great, up until Morning View. Now they're just too poppy. I prefered them S.C.I.E.N.C.E. era when they were more energetic and punky.

Have you heard A Crow Left Of The Murder? I certainly wouldn't call it poppy, but rather proggy. It's a great album, and you shouldn't judge it based on Megalomaniac (not saying you did).

Preferences aside. Just because band stops relying on riffs and being dude-n-heavy stuff doesn't yet mean they're becoming "poppy". They definitly remained trippy band though

I spent ages trying to come up with a word that summed them up. Poppy was the closest thing I could find

I haven't actually heard anything of their latest album, if it's a return to their old form, I might give it a try. If it's similar to Morning View, then no thanks...

I haven't heard their new album yet, but I thought Morning View was their best one so far... I just thought the songs themselves were more interesting. Anyway:

"Genre-breaking". Well, it all depends on what you compare it to, I guess. I still think both FNM and Incubus are *basically* rock bands, and though they blend several subgenres within rock, well, they're not exactly the only ones - actually, there aren't many bands who stay in one "pure" genre anymore.

But what is a "pure" genre anyway? No, genres always cause trouble because no one agrees how to define them and what to call what. What some people call indie, other people call alternative, or other people might be more specific call it post-grunge (?) - or some people just call it ROCK. With genre-breaking I usually mean bands or artists who blend basic genres (or "meta-genres") like rock, jazz, electronica etc - not just somebody who blend different subgenres of one of the above. Like if a jazz group would play a mix of cool jazz and bebop they shouldn't really be considered a "crossover" band by today's standards, in these anarchistic musical times (because it would still be considered as a jazz group)... Well, that's my opinion anyway.

The definition of genre-breaking music, in addition to being different from person to person, will also always be altered by the times, because all the new music who appears will set new standards and define new borders. Or more likely, "grey zones" - I'm not a believer of borders in music.

I think genres only really exist in the minds of marketing people... in any medium.

The only way to describe a band is to compare it to other bands, or to just put the CD in the player already!

Les Beatles, The Eagles, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Guns n Roses (also Slash's Snakepit), Metallica (gee, before the St Anger album I think), Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Deep Purple, Queen, Scorpions, MSG (I love the cool guitar sounds), Ozzy Osborne, blah blah blah those general stuff...

Oh and my neighbour's cat makes very nice tones every night. It even surpasses Britney Spears, sexy-wise.

Now I'm listening to Trio Töykeät: Kudos. So far I haven't got past the third track, each time it reaches the end point, I rewind to the first track...

I mostly listen to a song if I like it.

Everything from Classic, to songs about Pen and Paper Roleplaying games ("Always the first to die").

A lot of game soundtracks too

For example:

LOOM Soundtrack
TLJ Sountrack
The DIG Soundtrack
Monkey Island (1 & 2) Sountrack
Loreena McKennitt (The Book of Secrets)
Nena - 99 Luftballons
Alanis Morisette
Lion King - Single
"From Dawn til Dusk" (Didgeridoo Music)
Donovan - Atlantis
Monty Python - Monty Python Sings
The Last Unicorn Soundtrack
Music from Baldur's Gate 2
Shrek Movie Soundtrack
Shrel 2 Movie Soundtrack
Eurythmics (If I could find the CDs again, that is)
Title songs of "Around the world with Willy Fogg", "Les mystérieuses Cités d'or" (Mysterious Cities of Gold), "Ulysses 31", and other cartoons from the good old days.

And a lot more...
I hope that I will get the "Dragonheart" Movie soundtrack for my birthday.

Ok - where to start?
The majority of my music collection is mostly grunge/alternative/industrial rock :

Ministry
Mudhoney
Nine Inch Nails
Pearl Jam
Smashing Pumpkins
Faith No More
Stone Temple Pilots
Counting Crows
The Wildhearts
The Levellers
Pulp
Blur
Screaming Trees
Jane's Addiction
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Butthole Surfers
Metallica
Pantera
Live
Reef
Aerosmith
Type O Negative
Clawfinger...

God, the list is endless - I could probably go typing until my fingers drop off, but I think it gives you a pretty good idea of the music I usually listen to

I do like classical music and also soundtracks - my favourites being from the classic "bratpack" movies of the 80s - Breakfast Club, Pretty In Pink etc..
