Well my tastes have become a lot more varied in the past year or so .. so while my favourite music is usually rock-ish and saddish, I've gotten into all sorts of genres.
Currently one of my favourite albums is Goldfrapp - Felt Mountain. Other bands, in no particular order: Muse Plaid Füxa Hooverphonic Mogwai The High Llamas Yo La Tengo Piano Magic Rachel's (Rags, you'll love this one) Black Heart Procession Ursula Rocker Beth Orton Tori Amos Moloko The Gentle People Boards of Canada Stereolab Eels Future Sound of London Poe Lamb My Bloody Valentine Stephen Fretwell Spiritualized Sigur Rós Radiohead Röyksopp K's Choice |

I am afraid my music taste will qualify me as a bourgeois, cause I don't really know much about artists who haven't succeeded comercially. Anyway, some of my favourite are: Sting, U2, Suzanne Vega, Aerosmith and The Rolling Stones.
The Beatles, absolutely. In addition, I love classical music (Beethoven, if I had to choose one name) and movie soundtracks. That said, I remain quite open for new discoveries, although usually when somebody recommends me a particular performer rather than through my own research.

well, when I say 'a lot more varied', partly I mean 'a lot more obscure'. 85% of those I wouldn't have found without the internet. Those in bold are particularly good .. recommended listening
BTW Curt I also like a lot of what you listed, but it isn't the kinda thing I'm listening to atm. Love Depeche Mode [the most out-of-the-closet-kinky guys in music, really] and The Smiths especially. |

rare groove
|
Although I'm mostly into rock from the 70's atm, the stuff closest to my heart will probably always funk, from the 70's of course.
Now, there's a LOT of artists or groups that made only couple of kick-ass tracks, so what you want to do is to check out the compilations made by people that know this, most notably Josh Davis (DJ Shadow), Keb Darge and Pete Rock. Da shit is: Funk Spectrum 1-3 Keb Darge finds obscure funk songs together with DJ Shadow and Pete Rock. Deep funk, deep soul. Quality stuff. Keb Darge's Legendary Deep Funk vol. 1-3 More of the same awesome funk. Funk Drops Even more funk. Not as hard funk, more rare grooves. Pulp Fusion vol. 1-7 Jazz/fusion/blaxploitation explosions! Everything with The JB's, by far the best funk band ever. Deep funk. Just listen to The Grunt. Finally, stuff with Cymande, Ripple, The Meters, S.O.U.L., The Ohio Players, Herbie Hancock (Head Hunters)... etc. Let me finish this rant with a definition by an expert: Let me just state unequivocally that funk music is truth. Funk music is innovation. Funk music is loose and tight at the same time. Funk is happy music and funk is the blues. More than anything, funk is the sound of the streets. Anger, passion, protest and joy resound from every sinister bassline, every chicken scratched guitar riff, every James Brown inspired exclamation, every second line. Funk demands to be heard and felt, and has no time for beard stroking or contemplative intellectualism -- Josh Davis

Oh wait. Yes I do.
I listen to all sorts of stuff. Actually, that's a lie. I'm extremely conservative and narrow-minded in my listening tastes. I listen to classic rock. I listen to oldies from the fifties and sixties. I listen to metal. I enjoy good death metal. I've recently discovered some cool bands, thanks to a certain person. Hey Henke, ever heard Cruachan and Finntroll. Else, recommend me some good folk metal man. I'm begining to dig that stuff. Oh and I began to catch up on Opeth after My arms, Your Hearse. These guys are wonderful. I especially like some of the stuff on Damnation and Deliverance. Very Nice. |

I listen to a little of everything. It depends on my mood.
Most often it is something like the following, with the heaviest usually being played during my workouts. When you are about to lift a weight heavy enough to tear the skin right off your hands, it helps to have someone screaming in absolute rage in the background... Meshuggah Slipknot Slayer Metallica (pre 90s) Iron Maiden Korn Mudvayne Dream Theater Fates Warning Zero Hour Dio Ozzy Osbourne Marilyn Manson Machine Head Megadeth Despite the obvious trend above, I do listen to lots of other stuff, such as opera and any string oriented classical music such as violin concertos and stuff. I like classic rock and lots more. It would probably be easier to say what I don't like really, which is Rap, Disco (This includes all dance music), and musicals. My favorite music is usually rather jarring, with lots of time signature changes, but there isn't too much of that out there, and when there is, it is usually matched with a bad singer... |
