Default Sarah Michelle Gellar to star in Alice movie?

The one made after American McGee's Alice, of course. Could've been worse, I guess.

Ugh! I thought this was old news? I read the rumour (then) in PCG a couple of years back. But the confirmation only crushes me. I hate SMG. I'm a little scared of the Max Payne movie - just afraid that it won't do the game justice, that's all. You know, the usual fear.

SMG as Alice was first reported about six months ago and it has been discussed here before. (At least I remember so.)

Let me see if I can find that thread.

I read that Scott Faye interview a few days ago, and the part that is more shocking than this was that Faye talked about Max Payne being a $100 million dollar budget movie.

Natalie Portman was really keen on playing Alice. Why didn't they sign her on, instead of SMG?

I don't know.

I couldn't find the thread here, but here's for example from Gamespot dated June 21st 2005

It's kind of crazy that both Alice and Max Payne movies have been in production for +6 years already.
A young 1999 version of David Boreanaz would've been a perfect Max Payne.

There's no such thing as "being in production" until films are greenlit. Having the skeleton of an idea and cast is not in production, peeps! Having confirmation of the cast, companies on board to handle sfx/efx/pre/post, director, producer, production crew etc. is when it's in production.

May I ask what's wrong with SMG? Wasn't Milla Jovovich once attached to the film? SMG at least is better than Mila Jovovich, right?

Sarah is definitely not a perfect choice, but I don't see how Natalie Portman would be any better. I'm finding Natalie extremely annoying ever since I've seen her in Garden State.

I'd prefer some young, relatively unknown actress.

Ok, I stand corrected.

Let's say that both movie projects have been in development* for over six years. Max Payne has been in development for over eight years.

*That's the word they use in Yahoo's Scott Faye interview.

The girl from Mirrormask. She's great when she goes evil. Kinda scary.

Maybe better than Milla, but I think I'm just biased with her "Buffy".

Insane's right, tho'. An unknown woulda been a lot better.

An unknown actress for thr role could work I guess but she'd better be very tallented. I'd bet that it's a very demanding role.

SMG's all right. The movie wasn't very good but I thought she did a convincing job in the Grudge.

American McGee talks a bit about the movie on his blog, and basically says "don't knock SMG, her involvement has really helped get the film publicity".

An unknown would've been better, but then again I remember thinking thesame thing when I heard about the english version of The Grudge, and I think she did pretty well in that flick, so who knows? Don't be so quick to judge, people!

Well, in fairness, the star is related to the acting quality, which is one of the determinants of a good film .

Exactly, there are exceptions ofcourse, but quite often I'm amazed at the flexibility of certain actors/actresses to play a role I would've never imagined to work properly. Extreme example: was anyone else pleasantly surprised by The Rock in 'Be Cool'? The guy can actually act comically!

SMG is OK, but I don't know if she has the sense of humour and silliness that Alice requires. I love the Alice books.

Better SMG than that creepy Dakota Fanning.
