Being "funny" versus being funny
I personally think I'm quite funny.
I also think, at times, I can be quite "funny". Have you ever been in an awkward situation because your funny has ended up being "funny"? Discuss! What is a socially acceptable way to be funny to break the ice without looking like a dork? These questions need answering!

By being self-deprecating - our very own Scott is masterful at this.

My funny is always "funny", but some people find that "funny" funny.

I've heard that's become a popular joke, though, so it might not be good anymore. |

squaresie's funny in an oft brash manner. Wormsie's rare laconic quips have been funny. Scottsie's humour has a sweet molassis foundation. Bastich is funny in a roguish, macho, dump-it-all-out-on-the-table way. seebsie's naughty funnies bump-n-grind.
I can be funny to different kinds of people. I'm funny to most of my friends, make them laugh, giggle, nod while they snicker at humourous truths about life I share. I've been called witty, which I cherish because I love bouncing words off the mind's xylophone and seeing the vibrations shake the funnybones. But I'm much funnier and enjoyable company in person, I don't need the internet, I ultimately prefer to help people have a good day through seeing me and hearing my voice and my kooky animated face. I don't like trying to be funny to get attention, but I do love pointing out life's many contradictions and idiosyncracies which make me make faces and comments, and that makes my friends laugh.

There is no way to be sure. It all comes down to intuition. As far as breaking the ice goes, I wouldn't even bother using it then. There's nothing to go on as to what might be acceptable or appropriate.
Really, the only thing that works is experience and temperament. If something is funny to you, and you've developed a sense of pitch and timing, then it has a good chance of being funny to someone else who is similar to you. If it isn't, then it's their fault, clearly. If you haven't yet managed that intuitive understanding, then learn it. Watch and listen to good comedy. Throw out things that pop into your head spontaneously mid-conversation. Make mistakes without fear. Learn to use mild violence to cover social awkwardness. Eventually you'll either catch on or terrify everyone into submission. |

I would be able to comment if i knew what was "funny"...
Something funny to me could be "funny" to you and vice versa

I'm occasionally funny, more often on the net than in person. My dirty humour can't stand the light of day, so better to keep it to myself most of the time. It's just that people tend to look at you in a funny way when you stand there laughing at nothing. |

Frankly, I've stopped believing in that my jokes are understood by anyone, so I tend to call myself the queen of very, very bad jokes. I've offended so many people just by having a black, cynical humour that frankly, I don't care. I feel sometimes, people simply try too hard to be offended, so really - *shrug*.
In all fairness, though, most people get it, so I'm glad each time I elict a chuckle. Triumph. Mwahahaha.

I'm quite unfunny at times, sometimes painfully so Pretty weird considering my friends think I'm pretty funny, and my last girlfriend thought I was one of the funniest people she knew. Internet just can't translate my witty charm, I guess

Nine times out of ten I'm funny because I'm the straight (wo)man and/or clueless one, and everyone else picks on/laughs at me.
The other one time out of ten I manage to say something witty completely unintentionally. Peace & Luv, Liz
