That sounds like something from Toonstruck, Edna & Harvey or Torin's Passage.
 (And yes, that's me hidden under that costume above. I was at an anime (Japanese animation) convention in Toronto in 2002, as Taomon from Digimon Tamers.)

Both quotes were spoken by the game's main character, btw. In the first he was referring to a mystical cat, in second to a furry monster keeping the entrance to a very colo(u)rful place .
