Default Gabriel Knight 2 The Beast Within Real Life Locations Tour COMPLETED...finally!

Hi all,

I'm a big fan of the Gabriel Knight series and I've done a series of videos visiting the real life locations featured in the FMV game the Beast Within (A Gabriel Knight Mystery).

I visited Germany in 2008 and also in 2009. I wanted to see what game locations I could find and how similar they are in 'real life'. I took my camera along and captured some of the simularities and differences. I also had a bit of fun at Gabriel and Grace's expense using some of the more random and funny quotes from the game throughout.

I thought I'd post the links here for anyone who might be familiar with or a fan of the game. Its been a lot of fun putting these together.

These are the final videos I've just completed and uploaded to youtube :

17. Journey to Neuschwanstein
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3D4XyO88jY

18. Obtaining Ludwig's scrolls of Wagner's lost opera
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RprX8VU91ek

19. Abridged Ending of the Original Game

As always, wonderful videos!

But I have to ask... Is this really the end?

Thanks JJ and Jelena. You should definitely visit Bavaria if you get the chance. Its such a cool place to explore...tour or no tour.

>>But I have to ask... Is this really the end?
I wish it wasn't Andrea! I'd love to keep doing them.

I might find the urge to do some more in the future for the 2nd game....but its not likely.

If only the third game had been FMV as well... I would have definitely done some France sightseeing/filming too!

I've thought about Blood of the Sacred...blood of the damned, but theres no way I could do it as well as the second game. It would be too clunky merging the game footage to real life.

Thought you'd enjoy the Neuschwanstein stuff Andrea! Heheh...twas fun! You aren't allowed to film in Neuschwanstein....but I found a way!

For the good of the fandom...it had to be done!

I'm only bummed that the stuff I shot in the singers hall didn't come out.... I thought I was filming but I wasn't...bah!

Excellent videos! The editing is very good and I love how the game's music accompanies the footage. Hopefully one day I'll be able to visit Munich and Neuschwanstein and see these fantastic places too.

Loved the 'Ubergrau the Joker' video by the way.

Yeah, I figured you weren't allowed. Very crafty of you.

Many thanks. Editing that Ubergrau the Joker video was at times tedious, but still a lot of fun! I just kept finding awkward silences/expressions and comments and would just chuckle away putting it together.

Ubergrau was the running joke of these videos.... I'd like to send them to the actual actor who played him. I hope he'd get it a kick out of it. I know I would if I were him...hahah. He'd probably think "when the hell did I do this?"... Heheh.

Shhhhhh!!! Remember...it was for the good of the Gabriel Knight fandom Heh. I'm just annoyed I didn't film more in the singer's hall... I did that dreaded double pressing of the record button and didn't end up filming what I thought I was filming...what a rookie!

Thanks so much I want these to be enjoyed by fans of the series. It was all done in good fun. I was really surprised by how many of the locations I managed to track down. Its not always easy when your starting point is a screenshot of an obscure location! Heh.

I've just updated the links as I uploaded some higher quality versions of vids 17-20.

Fantastic work! I'm thinking of making a trip to Germany. Do you have a list of where all the real places are ("Rittersburg" etc.)?

Wow. I mean, wow. I was thinking GK3 should be easier, at least travel-wise, you just have to go to this one town (and surroundings).

Sorry...haven't been active on this forum recently...apologies for the delay in replying.

I don't really have a list as such...the videos pretty much explain where everything is for the most part....Rittersberg is actually a town called Rothenburg. You can wikipedia all the sites. Just getting to them can be a bit of mission... you can do them ALL from Munich though. The furtherest away was Rothenburg....that was about 3 hours away (on the fastest train route).

If you want to do this...what I suggest is this - go stay in Munich near the main Hoptbahnhof train station (not sure if I've spelt that right!)....it has lines which go out to just about anywhere in Bavaria....that way you are close to the Marienplatz/Dinastrausse/Ubergrau's Office/theatre (all located in Munich) and within easy train distance to any of the other sites like Neuschwanstein (2 hours away)....(Rothenburg (or its fictional name Rittersberg about 3 hours away)....Bayreuth (where the Wagner Museum and Schloss Ritter Castle - actually called Castle Ravenstone is/are located...a good 2 and half hours away)...Altotting (like an hour and a half if I remember correctly)....etc etc.

Beware though - you'll often have to change trains to get to some of these locations...sometimes 2 or 3 times. It takes dedication but if you plan out your trip well you can do it no problem. In total I spent probably about 10 days over 2 trips to see everything.

We just stayed in Munich for the most part and took trains out to the various places...but you can go stay in some of the locations if you so desire. We did that with Rothenburg...look it up on Wikipedia...such a gorgeous old town...it was great to wake up early morning and walk around...with its atmosphere and everything...so cool!

I haven't written a document which says how to get to everywhere in the 2009/2010 videos - but you'll find this resource helpful in finding locations for the 2008 tour :

http://www.adventurecorner.de/pages.php?id=293

There you can download a copy of the 2008 videos (with German subtitles...too funny for words! Especially when hassling Grace at the end at Starnberg Lake...heheh!)

Hope this helps

Great job! I've always wanted to visit the locations from these games.

I loved all of the videos. The awkward silences in "Ubergrau the Joker" had me in stitches, and your wife is awesome for playing along.

It would be great if someone would do a similar project for New Orleans and Rennes-le-Château.

Thanks for doing this!
