... and supremely silly.

Somehow I think any film involving muslims in a positive way will bomb in the US and UK. Come to think of it, that's probably why Sands of Time sold so badly. "What a stupid game... Doesn't everyone know muslims are evil?"

Well I went and saw Hidalgo yesterday, and the entire theater was packed with Americans, mostly White Christians too in all likelihood, and Hidalgo takes place like 90% in Saudi Arabia, granted Viggo Mortensen as protagonist.

See I think the main reason why Prince Of Persia didn't sell as much as it should have is because Persia is ancient Iraq, and as I recall there was a U.S.-led war there not too long ago. Other than that, I don't see anything even remotely "Muslim" or promoting Islamic ideals in the game, Sands Of Time. See, if the Prince was praying to Allah or something when he was swarmed by Sand Persians, then it might've been Islamic. And I seem to notice that the Prince himself has brown hair and greenish eyes, and he looks kinda white to me, perhaps resembling more a Turkish man than a Persian.

I'd be very surprised if many gamers didn't buy Prince of Persia because of supposed "Muslim undertones" or something.

It's the only 'sensible' explanation I could think of for gamers mostly ignoring such a brilliant game. Although I have to say, Prince Sharaman's explanation sounds more likely.

Then again, how many people are actually aware that Iraq was once Persia?

Iran was formerly known as Persia, not Iraq.

As I understand it, the old Persia covered both parts of today's Iran and Iraq.

PoP's poor sales could be because of it's release date...Early/mid November. SO many games are released around that time, and many get lost, like Beyond Good & Evil, and especially Metal Arms: Glitch in the System. That game got a HELL of a lot of television advertising (slightly less or maybe around the same as what PoP got, which is quite a bit) and great reviews, yet last I heard it's still struggling to sell past 100,000 copies. Though your explanations also make a lot of sense.

Oh, and Sands of Time didn't quite sell that bad...In a press release, Ubi said it's sold around 2 million copies thus far.

This hugely appropriate news report: A Prince in Persia says Iran was Persia, but maybe it did also include Iraq, I dunno... Most of the other sites I Googled mentioned Iran, but not Iraq though...

Iran, ancient
Encyclopædia Britannica Article:

Quote:
also known as Persia: historic region of southwestern Asia that is only roughly coterminous with modern Iran. The term Persia was used for centuries, chiefly in the West, to designate those regions where Persian language and culture predominated, but it more correctly refers to a region of southern Iran formerly known as Persis, alternatively as Pars or Parsa, modern Fars. Parsa was the name of an Indo-European nomadic people who migrated into the region about 1000 BC. The first mention of Parsa occurs in the annals of Shalmanesar II, an Assyrian king, in 844 BC. During the rule of the Persian Achaemenian dynasty (559–330 BC), the ancient Greeks first encountered the inhabitants of Persis on the Iranian plateau, when the Achaemenids—natives of Persis—were expanding their political sphere. The Achaemenids were the dominant dynasty during Greek history until the time of Alexander the Great, and the use of the name Persia was gradually extended by the Greeks and other peoples to apply to the whole Iranian plateau. This tendency was reinforced with the rise of the Sasanian dynasty, also native to Persis, whose culture dominated the Iranian plateau until the 7th century AD. The people of this area have traditionally referred to the region as Iran, “Land of the Aryans,” and in 1935 the government of Iran requested that the name Iran be used in lieu of Persia. The two terms, however, are often used interchangeably when referring to periods preceding the 20th century.

So it's sort of unofficially accepted that Iran = Persia. I suppose Persian turf could have bled over into Iraq too though...

I was googeling for prince of persia since I just bought a 2in1 package with sands of time and warrior within.
Was just wondering if anyone have heard of any further plans for for makeing a PoP movie.
Also figured I'd put in my contribution of pretty candidates to play Farah.
Aylar. Norwegian/Irananish

Not sure about her acting skills, since she's a pinup model but if it's any good well....

Actually, she's a former porn star, so her acting skills are less than important...

I'd say this speculation is more due to the fact that the vizier in the first Prince of Persia WAS named Jaffar. (With 2 F's and all.)

As for your final boss idea, I have to disagree. See Gabe's opinion of the game at Penny Arcade for a more eloquent explanation, but I agree with him when he says that the whole "lame final boss" argument only makes sense when you think of PoP in terms of a fighting game, whereas it's really a platformer, (an extremely brilliant one,) at heart. The "boss" of PoP wasn't the Vizier, it was
Spoiler:
climbing up the outside of the tower without having the dagger of time.
Once you've beaten that, you've pretty much mastered what the game has to offer, so from there it's really just a denouement in terms of gameplay.

As for who might play the Prince... I think as long as they make the character look decently Arabian, it will be a good choice. Depp's got a dark enough complexion to pull it off, so I think Depp would be good too, but it might be better to try and find an unknown actor. Plus, Depp's going to be tied up for a while, it seems, since he's so in demand right now. I doubt he'd be willing to do a mere video game movie. He's going for that Oscar.

Intrepid, i am amazed. I didn't know that the woman in the picture is the same one who played the evil egyptian woman in the the two mummy movies, and that's mainly because of the big wig she wore (that is, if that really was a wig). She looks really sexy indeed, and I definitely wouldn't mind seeing her play Farah in the movie.

Either that or Catherine-Zeta Jones. She was really hot in the Mask of Zorro.

There should also be traps in the arena to spice things up. Like, maybe you have to run parallel along a wall, then jump off and grab a pole in the middle, then hit a device with your sword that electrocutes the Demon boss, then jump off the pole cause it crumbles (but reappears shortly) and then repeat. Each time it'll get harder, the Demon Boss will spawn more minion demons to harass you, spikes'll start popping up.
Thank god you're not a game designer.

And thanks for not using proper spoiler tags. :Shifty:
