Give customers a word they can't pronounce unless people tell them, that's going to help word of mouth. Actually it's the word "we", but you can't trademark that, if ever there was a reason to misspell a word. A console called "we", and the next portable device, "us", perhaps they should be thinking more "why" and "me".

I liked Revolution, it's like Genesis, or Dreamcast, a complete overstatement, but there was something positive about them. "Wii" seems a smug marketing term that almost insults you, like sticking "i", "My", or "X" infront of things.

There's the case that Revolution wasn't a good idea, because it's also a 360 turn, great material for Sony fans. As both consoles would have ended up back where they started, instead of the incremental naming scheme, which I have absolutely no problem with.

Two i's, what kind of devil work is this, how the hell does that represent an "e"?

I'm not a big fan of calling it Revolution, never was to be honest.

I just kinda like the odd nature of this name, it's really starting to strike me the more I think of it.

Still...it's certainly not one to get your jollies woggling on a first impression.

I trying think being like a sega console would be the last thing they would do

But I dont see whats so good about an overstatement, I think Wii suits the console and how it looks...

Then again none of it really matters, the names doesnt change the console.

Because it shows confidence in your product, whereas calling it Saturn, a gas giant, where the majority of its mass is gas, can only be upstaged by calling your console Phantom.

I don't much like the looks either, but that's a little harsh.

I think Nintendo's plan worked out great, in the run-up to E3 what has become the biggest story, Wii, its pretty much what most of the gaming market is talking about, so not only does this set the stage for all eyes to be on Nintendo come E3, but it also gets all the name issues out of the way, so by E3 most people, even if they don't care for the name, will have more or less gotten over it, allowing Nintendo to focus on the games.

Actually, from all the excitement here and everywhere else I'm quite convinced it's only hardcore gamers that will actually be bothered by the name. The average person, and the average gamer really isn't going to care. It's only gamers that are so upset about it now.

Of course they are, that's because "their" Revolution's been wrestled away from them reminding them that they are not really in control, that they're just spectators. That's a very insulting implication to your average gaming nerd. And this machine is not even aimed at them so it's a good thing people don't make the connection between the name "Wii" and gaming consoles. Everyone will think it's for kids... Aren't you all forgetting a little something? You know, a tiny little thing called the marketing campaign?

Bah, I can't believe how short-sighted people can be. Wait, I can.

By the way, has anyone noticed how Wii reads pretty much like V, which is a Roman number 5? And Wii is the fifth Nintendo's proper home console (Famicon/NES, Super Famicon/SNES, N64, GameCube and now Wii). It's probably a coincidence, but maybe the genesis of Wii's name is much simpler than anyone thought.

Every thought it was nintendos' plan to get everyone talking about their console. It seems to have worked, the whole gamming community is going on about it.

As said before its about the hardware and games, nintendo makes CONSISTANT solid games. Just the fact I can download the past 20 years of games makes me want the system, no matter the name.

I agree that the new name is a problem mainly for gamers so far, from what I can tell (apparently it's not hardcore enough ). Those of you who say non-gamers are put off by it it, have you asked them about lame " XBO X" (Heeheehee, eggs bogs!) as well? "Play-station" is incredibly boring and predictable (and way more corny to me, in fact), and the reason it's not perceived as such as much as analogous "game-cube" or (slightly better) "dream-cast" is because people got used to it over the years - it is definitely the only really well-known console name among non-gamers (where I live, at least). Same with "game-boy". "Dual-screen" probably tops them all in terms of lack of creativity.

Car companies don't call their models "four-wheels" or "fast-machine", they choose more abstract names. Furthermore, I suppose hardcore automaniacs despised the name Ford Ka (hahahahaha! Ka-Ka! Geddit?), yet as far as I know it became quite popular. Especially among the unusual target audience for automobiles (eg. women), not unlike what Nintendo tries to achieve with former Revolution.

I'm guessing from your location.. different pronunciation of the letter 'W'?

Which kind of leaves a get-out clause for the marketing bods; since the pronunciation has to be explained, it could be changed for different regions ("Vee", "Way", "oo-ee" etc.). Sure hope so, as it could become a laughing-stock here in England.
