discussing adventuregamers.com
So I've only been attached to adventuregamers.com for the past few months or so, only gotten into the forum business in the last month. Before adventuregamers, I was pretty dedicated to Justadventure.com. However, I didn't really feel like the reviews rang true for me (i felt like they gave some bad games good scores and some of my favorites worse scores than they deserved). Adventuregamers seems to be a little more accurate on the reviews and just, in general, the community feels pretty awesome. Anyway, I was wondering how adventuregamers got started, how it has developed, and then where it wants to go. I realize that some of these questions are probably aimed at the people who maintain the site, but others can obviously add their own insights.
Also, I was wondering whether there was going to be some feedback on the survey that tabacco is running. It'd be interesting at least for me to know, for example, the results of some of the questions, gauging the dynamic of the people who post in the adventuregamers forum. One other question for all: In your opinion, how does adventuregamers stack up against the other on-line adventure game fanatic communities? It's awesome being a part of a worldwide adventure movement at adventuregamers.com. Keep up the good work chaps, and keep playing those games, rehashing those memories, and holding the industry accountable to true adventure gaming! |

Adventuregamers is hands down the best adventure game site on the net.

I just hope this doesn't turn into another flamewar between AG and JA.

I'd be lying if I said I always agree with JA's editor, or with some of the things he's done, but there isn't a "flamewar" going on or any such thing The banner you saw was actually a link exchange I set up together with Harriet Gurganus. I think there's a place for both sites in this community, as both sites offer a very different selection of articles, but I'm still kind of nostalgic about the old JA (before it became JA+). Does anyone still remember that?
We were thinking of making a forum post or an article in which we respond to the feedback we received from the survey. Based on the suggestions I've read so far though, I think you're going to like the changes we have in store for you this year. |

I'd be lying if I said I always agree with AG's editor - but I think it's the best English web site on adventure gaming out there (maybe next to http://adventure-archiv.com/startenglish.htm, which is kind of an IMDB for adventure fans). But of course there is a German web site about adventure gaming which ist even better

Quandary is also another major adventure game site but I don't think it can be compared with a site like Adventure Gamers. (I've said it once and I'll say it again... there reviews are to gushy! )

I frequent 3 game forums - Gameboomers, JA and AdventureGamers. Each site has its own personality. I'm most comfortable at Gameboomers - I have more in common with the posters there. I like the solitary, puzzley games thast are discussed there frequently. JA has a younger crowd, with edgier discussions. They seem to attract all type of adventure gamers.
I come to Adventuregamers to read up on a different perspective of new and old games. I found this site after BJ wrote an editorial about the older female demographic of computer gamers. I find the articles and editorials here well written and informative. The forum bias here is to 3rd person dialogue and inventory based games, and the age group is fairly young. I used to think that all the younger crowd (20s or less) only played shooters or RPGs. It's nice to see that adventure games have enough variety in them to appeal to all age groups. Besides, if I just stick to the games I traditionally love, I might miss out on something. |

Of course, it still could be better, as are most things in life. Personally, I wouldn't mind if Adventuregamers.com had a section devoted to helping players get & play classic adventure games, pointing things out like ScummVM and DosBox, and even if a review doesn't exist, maybe work towards compiling a listing of every know adventure game. Maybe even providing links to various places that might still carry old adventure games.

Yeah, that's a nice thread and all, but I think having a whole section devoted to that on the Main Page, instead of lost in the forums, wouldn't be a bad idea. Also, having links to places that carry old & discontinued games (I know there are places that do this for OOP Roleplaying Games), or perhaps even still sell the games (I think the Simon the Sorcerer games are still available), wouldn't be a bad idea.
Having this sort of stuff on the forums is great, but it'd be even better if a section on the main site was devoted to it. Its just a thought. Sky Warrior Bob

Just kidding, Terabin. Yep, AG's the best there is (most of the time anyway - their review of Black Dahlia was way off. You'll also find a lack of reviews of either Discworld, Discworld 2 - Missing Presumed.. which is pretty much unforgivable, and of Mystery of the Druids ). But you can also have a good heated debate around here without everybody walking off in a huff. (Only about half of them do ). I'm certainly not aware of any war between AG and JA+. What is JA+ btw?

If you read the about page then AdventureGamers.com is 5 years old on March 31st (or if you include Adventure Fan and Adventure Central, 6 years old in August but thats too far away ) So whats the community going to do to celebrate Adventuregamers first half decade serving the adventure community?

I just want to thank Terabin and colpet for their endorsements, and Stinger/Evan and Marek for giving me the opportunity to come on staff here. I'm glad most of you folks seem to think we're doing things right.
(You might not have realized that you were complimenting me, Terabin, but I write reviews for AG under my real name.)
