Hmm... I'm more interested in what's going to happen the following day.

Though I'm 23 and therefore a little out of the "20s or less" bracket, I think it's weird that people forget that games like Monkey Island, Full Throttle, the KQ and SQ games were targeted by advertisers at people our age at the time they came out (10-20)... At least it seemed to me like they were? The classic 3rd person adventures were often a staple genre for PC owning kids in that age group, along with Wing Commander, Lemmings, Sim City, and maybe some Dynamix tank games or some crap... at least it seemed like it with the kids in my town. I know a zillion people within 3 or 4 years of my age on either end who played a ton of PC adventure games in the early 90s --most of them have fond memories of it too if you ask them about it-- they just don't play them anymore. Sure Nintendo was also played if you owned one, but a lot of people seemed to play both.

That's such a weird bias to have, that people our age dont like them, if you actually remember back to how old the late teen early 20somethings of today were back when these games were actually being advertised and were fresh and new.

Anyway, sorry, back to our regularly scheduled discussion of adventuregamers.com.

Yes, it's a historical irony that today people are surprised to find that adventure games are played by younger gamers. This in turn surprised me!

I feel the same way as Jake. Adventures were marketed directly to our generation back in the day, which is why we're all hanging out around these forums. Certainly there are people of all ages, and people who have found adventures games only in the last few years, but I meet people often who are my age and remember the days of LEC, Sierra, Revolution, and what have you. It has been implied by certain people that people my age invariably come from "platforming" backgrounds, but the first game I ever played was an adventure game and they constituted by far and away the extreme majority of my gaming repertoire all the way up intil about 1999, after which I started to branch out due to dissatisfaction with current offerings. Back in the day, though, adventures were king. IIRC, a few days ago Jake showed me some press release or something from 1995 (give or take a few years) indicating LEC's dominance of market share, back when adventure games were arguably their primary focus (and don't forget that in those days, games had a MUCH longer shelf life, so games a few years old were often still sold and marketed). Anyway, no real point to this post other than to defend the adventure-gaming roots of my generation.

Does it really surprise anyone that young people like good stories? Like using their heads to solve puzzles? Getting immersed in a different world where the objective isn't to blast the hell out of the other people in the world? Thank goodness there are still people who want to play games with interesting characters, not just a nameless stud with a mean streak who wants to take his vengeance out on all of the evil baddies. The way these action games polarize the good and evil battle is pretty despicable. In an age where the U.S. tries to handle the rest of the world with vigilante justice and anachronistic cowboy-isms, action games are willing to say, "Yes, this is how one should deal with the rest of the world. Get your guns out and blast anyone who messes with you." But adventure games say, "Hell, what's the deal with this other guy. I want to talk to him and figure out what he's got to say and how we can help each other." Maybe that's a little exaggerated, but I just see a big difference in how one figures out how to beat the game.

Adventure games are about bringing together crazy characters, like a suave skeleton (manny) and a goofy demon (glottis). Oftentimes, the main characters even develop in the game as they learn from their adventures (syberia). If I'm going to play God (perhaps playing any game is in a sense playing God by controlling the characters in the game), why would I want to see people smash each other into a bloody pulp when I see my country's leaders doing it to innocent people all over the world. It makes me sick. Adventure games represent an alternative to all the craziness we see in the world. Adventure games are to the UN as action games are to American arrogance and the current administration. SO thank goodness that young people are being brought up in a different vein with a different mindset.

This, of course, is not to start a fight with people who like action games, and I don't necessarily think that just because you like an action game means that you can be grouped together with a certain political view or anything. I'm just sick of vigilante justice as its played out by political leaders, the media, gaming industry, etc. Hooray for peaceful problem-solving! Hooray for adventure games!

I think it probably works both ways, Alot of younger people are usually surprised to find out that alot of us elders enjoy gaming at all, let alone any type of action or rpg type games, which I personally enjoy along with adventure, I just like to game.
Anyway back to the subject at hand, this is probably the first real game forum I ever belonged to and about a month after I came here I joined GB, then JA, I enjoy all 3 of the forums, but I feel I can get more info on console games here along with pc games, and yes, it is a great place.

I was once in an online deathmatch of No One Lives Forever where one of the players was a housewife and another one was a grandmother. I also had watched my nephew do business with another Diablo II player who turned out to be a physician. My nephew was selling digital items from the game to him for real money. There are also other professionals you wouldn't expect to be serious gamers: lawyers, nurses...hell, many celebrities like Robin Williams and Christina Aquilera are self-professed gamers. I'm just wondering how many of them like adventure games.

Robin Williams allowed his young son to name his baby sister. And didn't veto it (being a gamer himself) when his son chose the name Zelda.

LOL! That's insane! Personally, I'd rather be named Zelda than Turok any day.

Off-topic, but this thread wandered way off topic already:

Ah, so you found the screwups the reporter made. Evidently the guy failed to do his homework.
