so what would be the best live show(s) you've ever been to, and would recommend others see?

mine: the tea party.... anyone who's everyone needs to see them live.

radiohead are up there (except last time they were in melbourne thom yorke had to cut it a bit short due to a throat infection..... or something), definitely a must.

i've heard that muse put on a phenomenal show, and i'm spewing that i missed out seeing them live last year (or was it the year before?).

i really want to see the dresden dolls, and i'm missing out on nine inch nails this year because i'm poor ...

I saw Muse at the Big Day Out last year. Good but limited by the festival setting.

I saw Aphex Twin at the same event. I thought that was absolutely superb but I have a bit of an Aphex fetish so my opinion's not entirely objective.

I didn't think Sigur Ros toured. Good music though (the couple of albums that I've heard).

Saw Soulwax supporting Tracy Bonham nearly 10 years ago.

Anyhoo, Ozomatli hands down. Korn were pretty good too, as were Asian Dub Foundation, but Ozomatli are the best live band on the planet, and have been given that label for good reason! Any band that climbs offstage and dances into the audience with their instruments is worthwhile!

Some great shows I can remember:

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy
Best. Ever. And I don't even listen to any of Will Oldham's (BPB is one of his many aliases/projects) stuff at home. It was a huge party, everyone smiling and dancing... So beautiful.

Lali Puna
Two shows, both incredible even though I dislike their newer songs.

The Notwist
Didn't seem that special at first, but worked its way up by the end of the show.

Do Make Say Think
Saw them 2 or 3 times, first time being the best (around Goodbye Enemy Airship The Landlord is Dead). Great brass section, beautiful music.

Gesundheit/Dälek
Gesundheit are extremly funny (and FUN!) metal spoof band with an insane singer. Dälek shows are always pure hell, some of the loudest music you'll ever hear. This time they had the whole club drowned in a sea of red fog, couldn't see past the tip of my nose.

The Apes/Les Savy Fav/The Mars Volta
The Apes were not that hot, but their singer justified their name climbing all over the place. It was amusing. Les Savy Fav were the shit, deconstructing the stage while playing and moving it all around the place. Crazy! Mars Volta were immensely better than the second time I saw them, their show was probably the best part of the evening which says a lot. Hate their studio material, though.

Mogwai.

Godspeed! You Black Emperor
The sound sucked, but boy were they godlike! And they acted as gods too, didn't seem like a particulary friendly bunch of people.

Trans Am/Golden
Fun. Golden sucked.

The Anniversary
What can I say, I was still a kid and they weren't much older. It was a cute emo show.

Scratch Pet Land
Not particulary impressive, but the turntablist DJing one of them did afterwards was mindbending
Never danced so hard in my life.

Asian Dub Foundation
Would've been even better if it wasn't so damn crowded.

Duran Duran Duran/Donna Summer not that Donna Summer /some other guy whose name I can't remember
Don't remember much of this one, but I know I had loads of fun.

+some shows by local bands whose names would probably mean nothing to any of you.

Ozzy Osbourne- Back when Randy Rhoades was still alive, on the same tour where Ozzy had inadvertantly bitten the head off of a bat. I was on the floor about ten feet from the stage.

Van Halen- On the floor, my arms resting on the stage. A girl next to me kept asking her boyfriend something and he kept shaking his head "No". I heard her say "Then can I ask somebody else?" and he nodded "Yes". She turned to me and said "Can I get on your shoulders?". I said "Sure", and kneeled down so she could climb on, then stood back up. David Lee Roth noticed her, sang most of "She Got Rhythm" to her, whispered something in her ear, and handed her one of the many bandannas he had tied around his leg. She immediately began saying "Lemme down! Lemme down!" and when I did, she took off through the crowd with nary a glance at me or her boyfriend.

Believe it or not, so do I. Many of my favourite gigs were sit-down at the National Theatre - Polyphonic Spree supporting Divine Comedy, for example.

I remember seeing Shootyz Groove with 311 in support, around 1994/95 at the Northampton Roadmender. Fantastic gig, only ten people there! Shootyz Groove even turned up to say "hi" at the entrance on low-slung bycicles, except embaressingly me and my mates didn't know who they were...

This was before 311 became really big.

A cousin of mine was exploring New York City and passed a tiny, hole-in-the-wall club with a sign on the door that said "Tonight Only-Soft White Underbelly". Since my cousin was a big Blue Oyster Cult fan, he knew that "Soft White Underbelly" was BOC's original name, figured the featured act was a BOC cover-group, and decided to go in for the show. Much to his surprise, what he expected to be a BOC cover group wound up being BOC themselves, and he got to watch an entire concert by his favorite group not ten feet from the stage for only a $5 cover charge.

I saw Rammstein live recently. It was awesome, but it could have been much better if it wasn't for the huge concert hall they were playing in. I could barely see their faces.

On the other hand, I saw Blondie in a very small concert theater last year, and I guess it qualifies as the best live show I've seen.

Rage Against the Machine was quite cool, but it was my first one.
And finally, Deep Purple sucked. Too old, too tired. Boring. And I love Deep Purple, so it was a huge disappointment.
