Pure action? Well, I'll be leaving out classics as Once Upon A Time In China and Raiders of the Lost Ark... but I do not care because the 1st Mortal Kombat movie was AWESOMEEEE!!!
Test your might! tutu tutu tu tu tu tutu tu!! (Unless Kung Pow: Enter the Fist counts as one.) |

The Rock, The Fifth Element, Kill Bill vol. 1
And Men in Black is not an action movie...

Men in Black? Hmmm... something tells me you just saw the movie for the first time recently and it BLEW YOUR MIND. But as far as action movies go, this thread is about to open up a whole new world for you.
I can think of one movie, but I'm such a big action buff that I'm going to jump on everything I can think of. Because to me, story doesn't matter when explosions and kung fu are involved. First off, my top pick: DIE HARD. Everything about that movie is action-awesomeness, from its stars, to its epic sequences, to even the title itself. Even if you packed all the greatest action heroes into one movie (oh, wait, they did) it still wouldn't live up to Die Hard. Some other personal contenders: The original Indiana Jones trilogy The Matrix Duel (the 70's had a lot of car chase movies; this one's my favorite) Commando (I love that "Schwarzenegger" is included in my spell-check) Hard-Boiled Terminator 2: Judgment Day True Lies MIGHTY MORPHIN' POWER RANGERS: THE MOVIE Mortal Kombat And some more modern picks: Kung Fu Hustle Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Shoot 'Em Up Everything Michael Bay and Tony Jaa's "The Protector". Dude jump-kicks a lamp post in this movie. I rewound and watched that part over and over again. |

I don't really go in for 'pure' action films, though I watched quite a few in my teens. I would say the last action film I truly enjoyed strictly as an action film and not as part of some franchise I just happen to have been a fan of for decades (i.e the X-Men/Wolverine movies) was The Crow. But if we're talking suspense thrillers, I'm a pretty big fan of spy films like Spy Game and Tinker Tailor Solider Spy, and yes, that means I'm also a Bond fan, which sort of straddles the two genres. My favourite Bond film is still On Her majesty's Secret Service, but Daniel Craig's Casino Royale and A Quantum of Solace were the tightest, grittiest, most action-packed of the series, which I quite enjoyed. Again, long-time franchise fan, though, so I don't usually count such things.

Raiders of the Lost Ark is the greatest action movie ever made.
