A quintessential British activity. Morris dancing.
The band The instrument at the back is a simple percussive one. It is essentially a stick with bottle tops loosely nailed all round it. It is hit on the ground and makes a nice sound. The dancers The rag coats are traditionally black rags, the colourful versions being a comparatively recent addition. In the original version you would also wear a hat and black up your face. The intention was to disguise the size, shape and appearance of the dancers so no individual dancers could be recognised. Short video of the dancing. Two slight issues. Someone clears their throat right next to the camera (OK, it was me) and someone walks in front.

The first time I heard about morris dancing was in a computer game. (You can probably guess which one.) The game makers didn't seem to like the idea. The protagonist certainly didn't.

Why is the music the same as in the Netherlands? Only we have different dances, with very old women.
Anyways, Morris Dancing is boring. It's not a manly thing. I went to the tractor pulling in Deurningen yesterday. That was fun: The smoke is normal. All tractors did that. And a bit of diesel smoke never hurt anybody, right? |

Did you see the big sticks they were waving around? Don't let the bells, raggedy coats and ocassional hanky-waving fool you.

I used to like them but I don't any more. Fortunately this former hobby has left me with the ability to remove smoke and other fumes from rooms. Reading the following spoiler is an acknowledgement that you won't hit me for the contents Spoiler:

And it's an ecological and challenging alternative to other sports to watch.

Well I think the Morris dance looks cool!
Tractor pulling isn't my cup of tea.

I love tractors, especially the Lanz Bulldog: They have this brilliant one-cylinder diesel engine. The sound they make is fantastic! |
