*waves to Squinky* I'll hop on my bike and come visit this afternoon, eh? Y'know, 'cuz we live so close to each other in downtown Canadia!

For the 6,948 people outside of Canada who still haven't seen this, it should address all those wacky misconceptions... or maybe create a few more???

The Rant

This insanely popular beer ad from a few years ago was even routinely performed in an extended version by the same actor (actually named Jeff, not Joe) in front of thousands of cheering sports fans!

Oh yeah, and about London, Ontario:
(Yes, Brits, there really is a London in Canada too. )
The city (population approx. 350,000) has been trying for decades to shed its reputation of being a conversative, quiet, WASPy, university and insurance "town". Out-of-towners, especially from larger cities like Toronto or Vancouver used to describe London as "a nice place to live, but you wouldn't want to visit there" because the city didn't have any "touristy" attractions like the CN Tower!

Sure, the University of Western Ontario (my alma mater!) and London Life are still here but nowadasys the city is well-known for its world class health-care facilities (recently featured in Michael Moore's Sicko) and its vibrant summer festivals like Sunfest, Ribfest and Balloonfest. London is also a much more multicultural city now than 20 years ago: many more residents with Asian, Middle Eastern, Italian, Greek and Eastern European and Latin American backgrounds.

Sooo, does anyone want to come visit me? I mean, besides Squinky.

Well, you do have Saskatchewan, most of which makes that delusion/stereotype halfway accurate.

Random bit of trivia: I was born in Saskatchewan, and lived there until I was five.

I'd say Good Heavens, but Farley Mowat used to live there too, so maybe it spawns talent. *shrugs*

That reminds me, apparently there's a city sign for a city called "Atlantis" of the Starnberg county district in Lake Starnberg (an actual lake) here in Germany. Though I am not sure if it's an actual sign of a now sunken city, or if it was put there as a joke. I'm assuming that it's a joke, because the sign doesn't look like a terribly old one (though they have been standardised for quite some time), though it does have growth on it. But lake Starnberg has a pretty constant water height, due to having only minor inflows.

Still, I think it's funny.

Hey, why is he playing Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance March No 1 in D Major? (aka Land of Hope and Glory) That's ours!

Wondered about that too. Then again, why should countries have the rights to random classical music? The European themesong is apparently Beethoven's 9th. Or well, snippets of it anyway.

Going off on a tangent, I dislike it as well that people can only hum the March of the Valkyries when you mention Wagner's Ring. That's conveniently leaving out a good twelve hours of opera!
