Gaming Can Be Good For You
A new study shows that some types of game playing can make people feel better about themselves. I think adventure games definitely fit the bill as far as fulfilling a sense of independence and achievement.

I always feel good when I've played an adventure game. I like the fact I have to think and use my mind in order to progress, instead of just having to shoot the feldercarb out of everything.

I tend to feel accomplished after completing an adventure game, but also with shooter games, which many AG players would like to put down as "mindless shooters", which of course is silly. Inituitive, and quick thinking are attributes of those who play such games.

I'd enjoy playing a shooter game if Horatio Caine was the target.

I declare Jihad!
People who have been on a gaming forum for 3 years and have fewer posts than I do, obviously know nothing of gaming.

I wish they'd have mentioned which games the people played.
It's good that games can create a "sense of independence, achievement and connectedness to others", but why not make that happen in real life? I suppose these games can be beneficial for shy people, and I hope it would give them the courage to change their lives. |

Wow! I feel a sense of independence, achievement, and connectedness to others just from reading that article!

This plays a big part in the desease that is known as World Of Warcraft these days. As a human being, you're constantly looking for acknowledgement that what you're doing is right. And good. In something like WOW you're getting positive feedback like that very quickly, even when playing alone (advancing thru levels, gaining cool items, etc.). But the social aspect enhances this even more. If you play together with others, maybe by joining a guild and advancing through its ranks. Of course, on the downside it's also what eventually leads to neglecting one's real life, living entirelly in this fake world and fleeing to a place where instant gratification is the rule, rather than the exception. Like... in a dark, bleak world like ours and oooh, wouldn't it be so much easier to call in sick, keep the curtains shut today and pay another visit to Azeroth, this land of milk and honey.
How good is TOO good? Careful!

People are often surprised about how much I know. When they ask me "How do you know that?" and I tell them I learned it from an adventure game, they laugh sheepishly and don't believe me. The general consensus among most people is that computer games make you stupid and you certainly won't learn anything from them. Pity.

She is! And cute and terribly charming, too.
But then, I'm known as her #1 |
