What richer(sp?) was it?

I always wondered what an earthquake would be like...was it like trying to walk on a bouncey castle with everyone jumping around you?

It's kind of like land turbulence, with rumbling.

I've experienced a few earthquakes when I was living in California (I wasn't in the Bay Area at the time and missed the big Loma Prieta one, thank goodness). The ones I've felt were small, and usually woke me up at night, since it felt like my entire bed was shaking from side to side. I would initially think it was a big truck passing outside, but when talking to friends I'd find out that they'd experienced it too.

When I went to Berkeley, I had friends from the midwest who couldn't wait to experience an earthquake, very silly. I myself think I was very, very lucky never to have gone through a big one while I was in CA.

I've been in two earthquakes that I can remember. One was in 1999. I had gone to bed and experienced much the same thing Natalia described (bed shaking from side to side). I was about to start yelling at my brother, something along the lines of "Dude, knock it off!", but then I realized he was staying at my grandma's in Belgrade. Then I thought the bombing Clinton was threatening us with had started. That actually happened a couple of days afterwards.

The second one was for my 18th birthday, in 2002, while I was in the college library. I thought it was a great gift from God, but then I heard that some guy died during the quake, so I didn't feel as special.

Earthquakes are overrated.

Although I remember being pretty shaken up (heh) by the first one I experienced.

Then again, I've never been through a really bad one. Maybe I'd feel differently if I had.

So far the only earthquake I've ever felt was a nearly negligable one years ago when I was living in Hollywood. I was in my bathroom and I felt a very slight tremor. Characteristically, having grown up in the Midwest, the first thing I thought was, WTF is going on with the plumbing?

We had a series of uncharacteristically strong (for the UK) earthquakes here in late 2002. I was living in a rather decrepit 1960s tower block at the time and once it became apparent that the thing wouldn't actually fall over, experiencing an earthquake in it was awesome. The building swayed for several seconds after the initial tremour.

Of course, by world standards, these "earthquakes" were very mild - the biggest was 3.9 on the Richter scale.

Still, ace.

I think I would freak out. Living in the east coast, we don't see too many natural disasters like earthquakes or tornados. The worst we get is snow and flooding. If the ground just started shaking, i'd probably crap my panties.

I remember hearing a theory (no idea where I heard it, now) that if exploration of the US had started from the west coast and moved east, rather than from the east coast and moved west, then earthquakes would be considered no big deal, but snowstorms would be this incredibly awful natural disaster. I mean, we may have a shake now and then, that usually doesn't cause any problems, and we never know if it's coming so we don't have to spend all this time worrying about it. You guys have snow and ice for 4+ months every frickin' year...

If the ground just started shaking, though, it'd probably be over before you knew it. Earthquakes are really quick.

I dunno though. You can hide from snow and ice. Can't hide from the ground cracking into a huge hole!

Interesting theory though. Now i'm wondering what sort of things would be different if that had happened. Big foot on the east coast? That would rock!

Don't worry. When your state breaks off and becomes an island, we'll all come visit you.

Of course you will. It'll be the place to be.

(Maybe then property values will go down enough for me to finally buy a house. )
