It's frustrating an absolute bore of a movie like Doom will end up grossing more than Serenity.
I rarely see movies in the theatre and made an exception for this one and did not regret spending my money. Fabulous movie!!!! I've never experienced such rapid changes in my emotions as I did in watching this movie I went from laughing to crying in a split second-

from Box Office Mojo

The international figures are encouraging.

It cost $39 million to make so they haven't quite reached that.

I know. Even if the worldwide gross does reach that figure, not all the money goes to the studio. Plus they had to spend millions on marketing the movie as well. Bottom line, DVDs are our friends.

The sad box office take on Serenity just pisses me off so much. It's not even Serenity in particular as generalized frustration with the moviegoing public. Argh!

Although I personally didn't like the movie, and am therefore not shedding any tears over its poor performance, I do find it puzzling.

Here's a movie that gets universally good reviews, uses a popular genre, is clearly mainstream-friendly, and created by a proven talent. What more could people want?

The only thing I can think of is that the marketing campaign was dismal.

No major actors, a name that doesn't scream "action", trailers aimed at fanboys, low theater attendance in general...

Well, you could say many of the same things about The Matrix when that was released.

I guess this movie just needed, desperately, some kind of hook that would make people sit up and pay attention. The trailers and marketing campaing failed to offer that.

It would need to reach double that to be considered a financial success... not a good sign for any sequels.

Though DVD sales may change that.

Serenity DVD is scheduled for a release in the US December 20th.

That's quick- 3 months from cinema to DVD.

It's probably a one disc release with a 2 disc "Special Edition" to follow next year.

Yeah, it's a shame about the poor performance at the box office, but that seems to be par for the course for sci-fi movies...

If nothing else, it made me buy the DVD box set of the series and I'm enjoying it immensely. I'm sure I'm not the only one!

Well, the international figures have finally caught up with the production budget. If the DVDs are as succesful as Firefly was, we may see something happen. I've heard rumors of a straight-to-tv movie w/ SciFi channel in the works. I'd wish for the series being renewed instead.

Muah, excellent.

It makes absolutely no sense - Firefly wasn't even on TV over here so it's not as though it can have a massive established fan base - but whatever!

We did take Buffy in widescreen though. That must be it. Yeah.

I've already got Serenity R1 on pre-order, I can't wait extra two months for the R2, so I guess that I'll have to buy both.
