I just had a look at the pictures for The 7th Guest III: The 13th Doll, I was wondering if all fan based games look this good, am I missing out by not playing these fan based games?

I didn't even know there was a fan-made 7th Guest sequel in the making.

Some fan-made games are really good, others are not, as you might expect. There are remakes for King's Quest 1, 2 and 3 and several other games that are really good and include voice-acting. Some original fan-made games, either full-length or short games are professional or semi-professional quality. Take a look at the website of Adventure Game Studio. It's a toolkit for adventure creation and it has a big community.
