Grim Fandango on XP
Hi,
Is it possible to run old game like Grim Fandango on XP these days? If it is, where could I find and purchase the game? Thanks. |

Yes, it works pretty well in Residual(ScummVM's 3d counterpart) these days. It should be easy to pick up a copy on eBay or the amazon market place.

Thanks, I didn't know about Residual. Googled it just now and it is what you say it is. Thanks again!

Ouch, the game now costs much more than back in the days. It's like a good wine, I guess

There are several patches and launchers that make the game runnable even on Windows 7.

But Residual works on all Windows, Mac and UNIX platforms. The patches and utilities are obsolete in comparison.

Question: Does Residual work with 64 bit Windows 7? It sounds really cool, but it looks still like a work in progress.

Residual is a work in progress. At this point it should be considered experimental. The Residual team currently only grades compatibility for Grim Fandango at just 70%. While the project hold promise, work progresses very slowly. At this point the best way is to use the Grim Launcher linked to above. Works great on all Win32/64 platforms. *NIX users can just use WINE.

The progress bar has been stuck at 70% for the last four months, but it's not because no progress has been made. Yes, Residual is still alpha, but the game is completable with a fewer minor glitches and runs far better than it ever did with any of the patches or launches. i should know, I even made the GRIMDATA.RAR patch that is floating around mixnmojo and other sites.
Residual sir, is your best option, as far as I'm concerned |

I have played the game in an XP Virtual machine using the Launcher and the result was excellent. But Residual is surely a nice alternative.

I recently finished the game in XP. I had some graphics issues and it crashed a few times but for the rest it was OK.

Grim Fandango on Windows XP.
Do this:
Install the game and put the patch Gfupd101. Get imagecfg. Go to the directory where the game is installed using Command Prompt of Windows. imagecfg -a 0X1 GRIMFANDANGO.EXE The game will work perfectly fine from the beginning to end. |

Well, it depends a bit on what gfx card you are using, but that is a good start, yes.
