Are you suggesting that this game is a reduction of "The Name of the Rose?"
Because it's not. It may share a similar medieval setting with monks, monastary and detective theme, but it isn't based on "The Name of the Rose" any more than the Father Cadfael series was.

Could you elaborate on why the game is so bad? I am a bit reluctant to play it. What holds my interest is that it might provide a good whodunnit in a gothical setting just like 'The Name of the Rose' did.

If I would play it solely for story, will it deliver for me?

As long as you don't expect it to be as complex as "The Name of the Rose," I think you'll be OK with it. I thought the mystery was more interesting than most recent detective games and I enjoyed the graphics. Hopefully the updated version has fixed the gameplay problems.

The name of the rose wasn't that complex right?

Spoiler:
Man doesn't like comedy book -> Man sets up a device to kill people who read it

If that's all you got out of Name of the Rose, you should be fine with The Abbey.

Er, wrong.
Maybe the film wasn't too complicated/complex but what about the book?

You can summarize all the world's literature in the same fashion and I guess it would sound something like this:
Spoiler:
Man is shipwrecked in a storm and gets on a desert island -> Man survives. (Robinson Crusoe)
Man kills an old lady -> Man is penalized. (Crime and Punishment)
Man wants to revenge his father's death -> Man ends tragically. (Hamlet)
God creates the world -> Man screws it up. (The Bible)
...

I lol'd.

I have not read the book but seen the film.
Although my post may have come across as shallow, as if I am impaired to recognize the sub-context and other layers in movies, this is not the case. =D

But I did approach The Name of The Rose expecting a good whoddunnit paired with a good modus operandi and original motive. In this sense the movie delivered. This doesn't mean I didn't appreciate the other themes throughout the movie, it's just that if I play The Abbey I at least want it to be a good whoddunnit. If it is, all the rest is a welcome extra.

The original game did not receive particularly good reviews here. I question why a "Director's Cut" would get more favorable reviews.

Particularly since the last "Director's Cut" release, Scratches, received poor reviews. Primarily due to playability issues.

Because a lot of the issues with the original game could easily be fixed, mainly because the problems fell into the gameplay category.

I didn't like the game at all. I liked the art style but the plot was stupid and a travesty, the setting quickly became boring and the worst part were the characters. Most were just obnoxious but the winner is your sidekick. I almost stopped playing the game because of him.
