I'm afraid there is nothing surreal about Chronicles of Mystery.

@tsa: I liked both Paradise and Sinking Island, even if I feel that, in the latter, the characters are a little too stereotypical.

Hmm, I never heard of such use of the word "surreal".

What sub-genre would games like Monkey Island fall in, besides humour?

Well, it's an interpretation of mine. I found it in all three Gabriel Knight games but also in the details of Chronicles of Mystery, Memento Mori and Phantasmagoria - to name just a few - and so I made that assumption. Maybe Jackal can shed a light? Anyway, I found "surreal" - as in dealing with strange, unsual, out-of-boundaries themes - extremely fitting.
Comedy. That's all

Noir. E.g., Black Dahlia, Post Mortem and Still Life.
But to limit that genre as a favorite does disservice to all the other games I enjoy/have enjoyed that don't fit the category. Perhaps I should not have replied to the "poll". It is far easier to say My favorite "genre" is Adventure v. RPG than it is to say I prefer Still Life-style games rather than FPFP-style games.

I enjoy all of them really, but Science Fiction and its plethora of sub genres such as Cyberpunk, Post Apoc, Alternate History and the like have always been favorites of mine. Though looking at my game shelves I notice that I don't really have all that many of them (adventure or otherwise).

Comedy, if I had to pick only one.
I like other genres/sub-genres, but comedy is the one that's given me the most pleasure over the years, and often incorporates others within it anyway (e.g. mystery, noir, fantasy, etc.), so win-win. |

I like soft horror, detectives, especially the Noir ones, humor of every color, Mystian and non-Mystian mysteries.
Not too crazy about SF, real scary or cruel horror, fairy tale worlds with elves and stuff. |

I'm just as happy to play any sub-genre, but probably my favorite is fantasy/sci-fi.
