so how much combat is there is penumbra: overture?
Hello!
I noticed Wal-Mart has Penumbra for sale for $18. It looks really good but I'm not a fan of combat games, especially when I end up abandoning an adventure game because I can't get past a combat sequence. So is there really that much combat in the game? Thanks! |

Have a look at this thread as well as the review. That may give you an idea if it's something you can handle.

Thanks Melanie. I guess I should have searched before I asked.

No problem. I knew there was a thread about the game before.

Also, try the demo. I couldn't get past the first timed challenge. So, it's no sale for me.

Timed challenge? I don't really recall any except for later in the game. Actually it's more like, HAUL ASS! ... or else...
There is some unavoidable combat in the game which isn't that bad. My only complaint is if you hit an enemy when they are down... it doesn't count. In other words, whatever you are fighting has to get back up and come at you again before the next hit you make will deal damage.

I don't know if the demo starts at the beginning of the full game, but one of the first things you have to do is get into a locked hatch. If you don't do it in a certain amount of time, you freeze to death. I died four times before checking a walkthrough for guidance. It told me to do exactly what I was trying to do. I just couldn't pull it off because of the finicky controls.

I can't remember that was ever an issue for me. But anyway, in answer to the original question: Enough that it becomes a certain annoyance, though little enough that the game still feels like an adventure. Also, it does help create tension, and as a result Penumbra: Overture is IMO one of the most scary games around.
