*spoilers* Zelda Phantom Hour glass- do you get to see mermaids?

I want to see mermaids.I have searched the net to see if there are any hints but I get swamped and then confused...any ideas.

You need a fishing rod.

Go to Bannan Island in the Northwestern Sea and talk to the old man in the house at the Northwest side of the island, afterwards go outside and throw the boomerang at the mermaid that pops up in the water, then go talk to the old man again, then go talk to Linebeck and then the old guy again, he should give you the fishing rod after that.
