Default Broken Sword 4 - Hall of Knights question

This isn't so much a hint request as it is an explanation request, but this seems the place to put it anyhow. I found the BS4 hints thread and tried to read through most of it, but didn't find what I'm looking for.

I've already solved the puzzle by a combination of brute force (and luck), but even knowing the answer I don't understand how I was to resolve it. So that's the meat of it, now to the details.

In the Turkish catacombs after opening the first door you find yourself in the Hall of Knights. Solving the first two shields was no real trouble, it's the third shield that's got me flustered.
Spoiler:
I read the manuscript over and over again, went through all the notes in the PDA repeatedly and stared at the picture of the Knights on the manuscript for hours. I went on the assumption that I was trying to cypher what was on the shield of the fourth Knight depicted on the manuscript, and applied every sort of pattern solving technique that I could think of. I just can't figure it out.

Thank you, kind folk, for enlightening me. It's got me slightly worried that I couldn't find this very question in my searching, the fact that nobody else seemed to have trouble with it makes me think I run the risk of being an idiot

Here's a Broken Sword 4 discussion thread but it has a lot of spoilers so it'd be best for when you're done with the game I think. I'm pretty early in the game so I haven't gotten there yet. Hopefully someone may be along to enlighten. If not, I'll peek back in when I get there.

OK.. So I've finished the game, and I've had a look through the discussion thread you linked. I'd seen that already, but wanted to stay away because I figured most of the topic would be talking about the story, I wanted to avoid spoilers.

There is an abbreviated explanation of the puzzle in question in there.. It's a stretch :S

I'm at this puzzle right now and I believe I need to use this from the manuscript:

Now, I'm just trying to figure out how to get started (and I'm probably overthinking it).

Edit: Bah, I looked up the answers. I didn't use the stuff on the manuscript I needed for the first two shields. I'm always lazy with these kinds of puzzles. The answer makes some sense afterward but I don't often get there on my own.

Heh, I guess it makes some sense. I still think they were reaching, I'd have never gotten it.

You have to guess what the colours and symbols on the 4th shield are, based on the 1st 3 shield. The only 4 colours used in the 1st 3 shields are Yellow, Blue, White and Red.

So if the upper left corner of the 1st shield is yellow
and the upper left corner of the 2nd shield is blue
and the upper left corner of the 3rd shield is again yellow
then the upper left corner of the 4th shield must be blue.

Which gives the pattern yellow-blue-yellow-blue.

You have to base the colour of the corners on the 4th shield based on the patterns from the 1st 3 shield.

So if the upper right corner of the 1st shield is blue
and the upper right corner of the 2nd shield is white
and the upper right corner of the 3rd shield is again red
then the upper right corner of the 4th shield must be yellow.

which is the only colour not used in the 1st 3 shields, giving the pattern Blue-White-Red-Yellow.

Now you can easily guess the colours for the bottom corners of the 4th shield.

You have to use the same principal to guess the colours and type of symbols on the 4th shield.

The number of symbols on each corner is based also on the 1st 3 shields.

So for eg.
If the lower right symbol of the 1st shield is 1 flower
and the lower right symbol of the 2nd shield is 3 flowers
and the lower right symbol of the 3rd shield is 2 flowers
then the lower right symbol of the 4th shield must be 1 flower

Descending order 1-3-2-1

The pattern on the other corners can be also in ascending or equal order.

This should help you.
I hope that I explained it well and that you understand how to solve it.
