I think the most difficult genre is the scrolling shooters, like Ikaruga or Gradius V. The Japanese studio CAVE had made some extremely hard games these year. Mushimihime, released in late 2004 in the arcade, was the craziest game I've ever seen. The enemies were simply washing the screen using there bullets......And some other games like DoDonpahi: Daioujo(DoDonpachi III in North America) and Ketsui would just make you feel hopeless too. It is said that only less than a score of players all over the world could finish Daioujo. About a week ago a Japanese player finally defeated the final boss of Mushimihime, when 3 months had passed after the release.

What about Tetris? That game is absolutely impossible. No matter what level I get to, I can still never beat it!

This looks far too advanced to have come out before Wolfenstein.

I don't take 'nightmare difficulty' in account, or it would be impossible to point out the most difficult game for me. Considering games on their normal difficulty setting, I'd have to say Chip's Challenge is the most difficult game I actually finished. As far as I'm concerned it's also the most ingenious and fun puzzle game of all time.
It's also available for download on that webpage, so if you haven't played it I suggest you give it a try. It boasts 144 levels, but I don't think many people actually made it to the end. I have to admit I had to use guides for a couple of them as well. Oh man, the memories I have about some fiendish levels in this game. Some levels took an hour to finish, and every small mistake was fatal and meant you had to start all over again. Last edited by Phantom; 03-10-2005 at 03:50 AM. |

Stuntman was freaking hard. Having to do the same stunts over and over again without making a mistake is frustrating beyond belief.
And I remember that the 2nd last level in Syphon Filter 2 had you running through an entire building full of unkillable guys. I have no idea how I eventually got it, but there was a lot of luck involved.

Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines & Commandos: Beyond Call of Duty. Damn, I almost broke my keyboard playing these two.

I have to agree, Commandos 1: Beyond The Call Of Duty has to be one of the most difficult games ever. Commandos 1 was incredibly difficult too, but the series got notable easier with each sequel. The problem with Commandos 2 was that you can systematically wipe out the entire map with the same 'throw a cigarette and slit his throat/knock him unconscious' trick. Pretty lame.

Rings of Power, Naughty Dog claim only five people have completed it. I must have been 7 when I got it for my birthday. I've tried to complete it a few times after but still no luck. The intelligent bear!

Spindizzy is, without a thread of a doubt, the most difficult game I've ever played (and also one of the most enjoyable ones). I still haven't been able to finish it 15 years (or is it more?) after I first played it.
