Default Anyone playing (or rather going to play) 'The Witcher'?

http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/preview...itcher-Preview

I'm sure you've all heard stuff about the game. Polish RPG with a very strong storyline (you play a specific character with memory loss, not unlike Planescape Torment in other words). It uses a heavily modified Neverwinter Nights engine, and looks quite spiffy.

... and you also get to have sex with loads of broads who after the act proceed to give you half-pornographic tarot cards for you to oogle. Did i mention it looks promising?

I've been reading posts by people who are already playing. The "reviewers" are mostly positive, but not too excited. Combat is disputed, also the inability to jump over small fences etc. is supposed to be mood-killing. On the other hand, some describe the game as most atmospheric and compare it to Gothic 2.

In Gothic II we could use drugs, and now in The Witcher we can have sex.
Whats next? Sex and drugs together?!

Anyways, I would love to play it, but I'm afraid that
my computer hardware will never be able to handle such a game.

Well, you can drink in Witcher. Also, in an early preview I saw some medication with negative sideeffects. Actually, I'm pretty excited about the game, despite the first few mediocre reviews it's gotten by a German gaming magazine.

Yeah, it looks like it can be a lot of fun. Looking forward to it myself.

The whole sex thing seems to be some mini-game of sorts, not sure if you get XP from it or anything, it seems more like a bit tacky strip-poker esque thing where you get a prize (a half naked women on a tarot card) after you get her drunk or seduce her or whatever. Seems kind of dowdy, really, but somewhat amusing as well. Can't really say for sure, haven't actually figured out how it works yet (seeing as I don't have the game). It fits together with the rest of the game I guess, pretty mature (in the sense that it's not for kids) writing and action with loads of blood, guts, cussing etc, and not to mention pretty adult themes (racism, terrorism), seems it's a more realistic take on the historical foundations on which fantasy in general is based on. The patriarchical world with woman as mysterious romanticized objects of nature might be more drawn from classical gothic/romantic litterature/art though. The tarot I saw portrayed the girl you just had sex with not as passive, but strong, sexy, mysterious, linked with nature (she had a pussy... erm.. cat in her.. erm.. lap).

Anyways, I'm looking forward to it. I hope it's an RPG for the ages.

If it's anything like the books, I would describe it as mature, yes, but not one iota more historical than your standard fantasy. In fact, anachronisms (or, rather, references to the real world*) are one of the trademarks of Sapkowski's saga.

I am cautiously optimistic about this game, but I must say I don't get the point of setting it after the books and yet using the (*yawn*) amnesia trope. It seems like the worst compromise possible. Those who have read the original are deprived (at least initially) of the feeling that they are revisiting a familiar setting. And for those who haven't, there is bound to be myriads of book spoilers as the plot progressess, anyway.

*although there are hints that the Witcher's world may be our actual past, so the correct term could be "anachronisms", after all.

It was released here yesterday, my fingers are itching but I would like to try out a demo first.

Good thing I didn't say anything of the sort then

From the reviews I read, the game is pretty good, but the loading times are excruciatingly long.

I would love to get this as I have been following it for ages now, but I don't think my system could do it justice right now. I'll just wait until I upgrade early next year and this and Crysis and some choice other titles will be mine in all their glory!

Can anyone tell me what the writing and voice acting is like? I was a bit disappointed with some of the dialogue in the trailers...

And does the combat play well?

I haven't gotten The Witcher (yet) but here's a nice overview of the combat:

http://www.rpgwatch.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3071

Here's a review from Gamebanshee:

http://gamebanshee.com/reviews/software/thewitcher1.php

Here's a nice post as well:

http://www.rpgcodex.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=21091
(especially the # 4 post which mentions some detective sleuthing in the game and some other great stuff - spoilers within the linked thread, though).

Here's the word of mouth from the Codex:

http://www.rpgcodex.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=20967

These guys actually like the game

Here's The word of mouth from Rpgwatch

http://www.rpgwatch.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3029

If I could get this game in Polish with English subtitles, I would really really go for it

I don't know why it is, but something about this game is telling me to wait for a price drop.

Same here. I was really excited about it at first, but my interest has somewhat dropped of late. Not that I mind, since there's too many games I want to play as it is. Still. Seems a pity.

I've tried it at a friends house and it seemed really great. I have ordered it now and it should arrive in a couple of days.

Yeah, in polish (figures) so you'll have to take my word for it. They're going to release a toolset and a demo, somewhere mid-December (plus, along with the toolset, a free module/add-on/adventure/thing-a-ma-bob)

Heh, should've read the rest of the thread before posting Hope you won't be disappointed, Henke.

The game seems good but I have to buy more memory for my computer if I want it to run smooth.
