Default Super Mario Bros for the GBA

I've recently bought Mario Bros 3 and Mario World for the GBA, so I'd like to add Super Mario Bros, but one thing's bothering me - is it possible to save your progress? I heard you couldn't.

Nope. It plays just like the original.

It can be hard to find, too. I managed to get one used for $20, but they go for $50+ on eBay.

I suggest you get the GBC version ("Super Mario Bros. Deluxe") if you can find it. I've got that version, and unless you're looking for the nostalgic experience I can wholeheartedly recommend it. In addition to the original game (a bit cropped, but perfectly playable), you can unlock the full Japanese SMB2 (in America called SMB: The Lost Levels), which is really really difficult. They also threw in some small ideas from SMW and SM64 which are actually improvements. Oh, and you can save.

Just make sure that you're not going to play Super Mario Deluxe for GBC on your DS. Because it won't.

I thought that, since DS is compatible with GBA, it is, by extension, compatible with GBC. It isn't?

Ah- good point, I hadn't thought of that. But you're right.

No they abandoned the original gameboy and gameboy color technology which is why I still have my GBA SP along with my DS.
