I suggest you get the GBC version ("Super Mario Bros. Deluxe") if you can find it. I've got that version, and unless you're looking for the nostalgic experience I can wholeheartedly recommend it. In addition to the original game (a bit cropped, but perfectly playable), you can unlock the full Japanese SMB2 (in America called SMB: The Lost Levels), which is really really difficult. They also threw in some small ideas from SMW and SM64 which are actually improvements. Oh, and you can save.
