Default King Kong: The game

Ok, I'll admit it. I've been a huge King Kong fan for... - hey, seems like it's already decades.

So I downloaded the Kingo Kong game demo today.

I'm only posting because I'm sure I'm missing something. My simple question is:

Where's the game?

I've "played" quite a portion of it, I think, without ever feeling substantially in control of anything at all. It appears to me that I'm guided through a never-ending series of cutscenes and pre-scripted events, without being able to really influence any of it.

I find myself hitting mouse-buttons like a, uh, monkey, but still my general impression is that a Next --> Next --> Next --> Finish Demo menu would be equally challenging, and more appropriate for this game.

What am I missing?

So:

King Kong
= Fahrenheit - Freedom of Choice

?

I suppose I ought to finish the demo, so that I can actually comment properly...

From the gameply videos I've seen, I was afraid it might be a bit like that. Luckily they've put Starforce, even on the demo so I don't need to worry about that. Nice of them, that was...

And, Fahrenheit - freedom of choice? Pfft, as though that were possible...

If the demo's any indication, it'll be more of an interactive thrill ride than anything. As smoothly handled as BG&E, but definitely not as deep.

I'll have to try and get this again....massive slow server problems last time. I just read that the movie is 3 hours long and that's final cut. Epic.

It is thrilling, in terms of atmosphere. But what I've seen from the game needs minimal input from the player.

There's a lot of discussion on how cutscenes and scripted events should be playable in order to keep a gaming experience flowing and immersive.

I must say that in this case (and others), it has the opposite effect on me: When I realise that the game basically plays itself, I feel like an idiot for having believed that I could influence stuff.

Then it's really kinda like Fahrenheit.

And none of the charm...
I was looking forward to the game (because of BG&E) but after playing the demo I'll wait until it hits budget. It has some nice textures, and that's about it. The gameplay is clearly console-oriented, and the controls have a "rushed console port" feel.

Yeah, I didn't like the PC controls either. I'll be getting it for Gamecube.

Hmm, I really liked the demo. Apparently I'm easily led by the nose. Or I'm just a sucker for dinosaurs (note: yes, this is it.)

Really, though, I agree a whole game designed like that would get a little mindless. But as a demo it worked for me. And Ancel has always made a habit of blending together a wide variety of gameplay and activities, so I'm pretty confident the final will have far more to do.

I still say whoever uses the "press a button as fast as you can" game mechanic should be given a cuff upside the head.

I thought it was stupid, how the hell is one man suppose to hold off a dinosour with a little water pistol?

I totally agree Biggest culprit, god of war, especially when you are in the later stages. You will need to press a button at an insane speed. I found it humanly impossible to do so grabbing the controller the normal way, so I had to hold it like a percussion instrument on my lap, and pound on the circle button as fast as possible.

And the reviews start pouring in!

Pelit Magazine arrived today and they gave a three page(!) review to Kong and the score is 92/100!

Good:
  • Athmosphere
  • Polished controls
  • Great sound world
  • Excellently planned missions/levels

Bad:
  • Some camera problems
  • Graphical bugs

I'm more excited about this game now than ever before! 15 days to release!
