Default Private Messaging Restriction for New Users

This is a little frustrating, as one of the reasons I joined was to send a PM to a certain user who I thought could help me with a game issue. I have posted the issue as a topic in the Hints section, but no responses, yet, which isn't surprising, since it's rather specific and not a mainstream game.

Since that avenue didn't work, I'm faced with either:

a. Hijacking another thread to post my question
b. Cluttering up another category with an off-topic thread that doesn't apply to anyone else

The real irony is that I had to even post THIS thread, because the welcome e-mail I got from this forum when I joined said:

Quote:
Thanks for registering at Adventure Forums! If you require assistance using the forums at any time, send a message to one of our moderators. If you need hints or are experiencing technical problems with a game, please post a message in the Hint Requests and Technical Problems (http://www.adventuregamers.com/forum...splay.php?f=18) forum. Finally, please have a look at the forum rules (http://www.adventuregamers.com/forum..._new_faq_item4) if you haven't done so already.

We are glad you have chosen to be a part of our community and we hope you enjoy your stay.

Happy adventuring,

but I can't even send a PM to a moderator, because of this restriction!

Well, if you post enough in the forums, the restriction will be lifted. I forget the actual number offhand, but it's hardly overwhelming.

There were too many people joining just to spam others with PMs for us to remove the restriction, though.

Incidentally, your other stated alternatives really aren't options. You posted in the right place, so either someone responds or they don't.

Yeah, I can understand the issue, but allowing PMs to the mods, if possible, seems reasonable. And I agree, the other alternatives aren't good options.

Another thing that struck me as odd was that I received a PM, but then couldn't even reply to it.

Why do the posts in the Chit-Chat forum not count toward a user's post count?

because it's essentially the spam (within reason) section
my advice is just take a look at some of the threads in the other sections, find one that interests you and throw your thoughts in

There was a fairly big problem a few months back with people (or maybe just one person) signing up and sending spam PMs impersonating moderators / admins. Putting a restriction on the PMs was the only way to make it stop.

Good point about allowing PMs to moderators, though. Not sure if that's possible but we can look into it.

EDIT: Sounds like opening up PMs to mods / admins is not an option, but we'll at least edit that welcome message to point people to this forum rather than saying to send a message that they won't be able to send. Thanks for bringing it up!

Heh, you all were right about the minimum being low. My replies to this thread alone have been enough.

The post above yours ought to be a pretty good indication.
