Default A riddle thread

Here's a riddle I made up myself! Let's see how long it takes for someone to guess it right!

-What is a jar, but made out of wood?

We could make this a riddle thread, the "winner" puts his own riddle and so on.... Or not... I just want to see if anybody can guess this one! nobody has yet!

But since this IS an adventure forum, this should be a piece of cake for you!

It's a well known riddle, I think. I already heard it, anyway, and it's not like I'm english or anything.

Now that I think about it, I might have cross upon this one in a computer game. Oh, maybe Companions of Xanth. I though it was easy at the time.

Just so people know, in general riddles such as these should ideally only have one answer that makes sense. The answer to Tanukitsune's could be "a wooden jar" and the answer to AGA's could be "26"--neither was the answer that they were looking for, but both work perfectly well given the question.

So you want riddles do you ?

Here's a rather stupid one.Spare me the flames please.

Smith worked for the police department his entire life.He was given a fond farewell at his retirement. There are some puzzling aspects of his career though. He never missed a day's work. Was extremely sincere in his job.Yet he was never promoted. As a matter of fact he wasn't even paid a single cent for all his life's work at the police department. How can this be?

Did you read Nine Princes in Amber, Remixor? Because some guy says about the same in this series, when he's given a riddle. Good series of book, by the way, IMHO.

Tanu: yours used to be a common joke when I was a kid, but phrased a bit better (so it couldn't have two answers)

When is a jar not a jar? Yeah, when it's a door

Both yours and beri -- I mean AGA's ( ) are [bad ] jokes rather than riddles, IMO.

mycroft's was a riddle but incredibly easy

Then again I hate impossible riddles, which they usually are if they aren't stupid easy .. so I shouldn't complain.

Yes.
The answer is that smith is a police dog.I admit this one's pretty easy.
Lemme think up a head-scratcher then..

I still don't get it. How is a door a jar?

And is English an official language in Malta or was it the same riddle/joke in another language (umm... Maltese?).

Should, but never do. For example:

One night, a boy, and his father step onto a boat for a fishing trip. It lasts until dawn the next day. Three people step off the boat. Who was the third person?

Spoiler:
It's usually spoken. night/knight

However, it's about 5 minutes worth of disclaimer to actually establish that the boat was empty, that nobody swam up to the boat during the night, that we're not talking about a species in which the male is the one that gets pregnant, ... In general, I'm just not a fan of these riddles.
