I must agree with Jelena!
That's also a rather striking tartan, SSH. Is it your family's official one? I don't recall having seen that particular one before, but my experience with such things is somewhat limited.

Tartan is a woven cloth of criss-crossed vertical and horizontal lines.
It's back in fashion!!! |

To add to that, in this context "tartan" also refers to different specific weaves of cloth that represent the various Clans of Scotland. SSH's tartan is "Ancient Buchanan" which to my understanding means he is related to the Buchanan Clan. Perhaps SSH, Lucien21, or some our other Scottish members can provide more in-depth information or correct any errors in my brief explanation.

Specifically, MacCormack is a "sept" of the Buchanan clan: http://www.houseofnames.com/xq/asp.c...-coat-arms.htm
The Buchanan motto is "Clarior hinc honos" Historically, clans did not have particular patterns, although because they lived in particular areas where different natural dyes were available, they had different colours available to them. It was not until the 19th century that the clan-tartan associations began, possibly popularised by Sir Walter Scott on the visit of King George IV (that's the Rupert Everett/Hugh Laurie one ). See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tartan for more. |
