Default Unusual foods you love

You be the judge of how unusual they are - but I think we all have favorites that aren't quite in the mainstream of common foods.

One of mine is fiddlehead ferns - grown in the northern swamp areas, the ostrich fern, like many, starts growth coiled up like the head of a fiddle - some kinds are poisonous and some can cause cancer, but ostrich ferns aren't either and they're yummy. They kinda taste like a cross between asparagus, spinach, and artichoke hearts. Steamed/boiled and with butter and lemon, they're really good - the only problem is that when you get them fresh, they're filthy, and need lots of cleaning to get the mud out.

Pretty much any ethnic food, including but not limited to:

Stuffed Grape Leaves

Kibby

Babaganouch

Hummos

Tabooli
(I had these five for lunch today)

Pad Thai

Pad See Yu

Chicken & Coconut Milk Soup

Spicy Basil Rolls

Satay Chicken

Green Tea Ice Cream

Chicken Tikka Masala

Aloo Sag

Rasmalai

...several other Indian dishes I don't know the name of

Unagi

Calamari

Octopus alla seviche

Escargot

Oxtail Soup

Squash Soup

Miso Soup

Shrimp & Pork Salad

Blue Cheese Potato Salad

Chocolate Covered Coffee Beans

Pasticio

Pizza with Artichoke Hearts, Sundried Tomatoes, Feta Cheese, Portobello Mushrooms, and Pineapple

Grits (duh)

Basically, I'll eat whatever's put in front of me. Except watermelon, of course.

I think unusual in this case means exotic or completely the opposite of cheeseburgers, fries, and Coke.

'Dinoogan' - otherwise euphemized as 'chocolate stew', a Filipino dish made with beef or pork with peppers, in a thick black blood sauce.

Most types of ethnic foods, particularly Indian, Vietnamese, Korean, Thai, Filipino, Ethiopian, Brazilian, Spanish, Chinese dim sum, Japanese, Turkish, and general Middle Eastern. (Scottsie and I would be perfect dining companions)

Well, I would have loved that lunch - I adore middle eastern foods. I've never made kibbi, but I make stuffed grape leaves often, and humus bi tahine, baba ganouj, tabouli, are often things I serve with lamb in some form or another. I tried making falafel once, and it tasted good but all fell apart on me. I like Greek foods too - spanakopita - filo filled with spinach and feta, moussaka - creamy, cheesy lasagna, spinach salad.

I'm not fond of Far Eastern foods, though - don't like the seasonings, I guess.

Primarily! I insist. That's where the vinegar addiction is from.

Definitely. Mediterranean cuisine is quite similar to Middle-Eastern, so I can say that some of that stuff, or stuff similar to it, (say, stuffed cabbage leaves, Mousaka) is what I regularly eat at home, and isn't really unusual to me. But it's still damn good!

But here are some unusual things that I've enjoyed.

Philippino icecream
Kim Chi
Seaweed Crisps
erm...Sushi?

- Risotto

- Baklava (delicious desert)

Ooh, I found a recipe... awesome.

- Tandoori chicken pizza with no cheese

- My dad once made a sort of pastry with mince meat (beef I think), a number of ingredients I don't remember, and honey! It was wonderful.

- Also, don't know if it counts as 'food' but... dark hazelnut chocolate!

Damn, that is like 100% sugar! It's absoulutely disgusting! I tried it once and went for an hour (until my sugar dropped back to normal).

I like grilled prunes (peaches, apricots) with bacon, other than that I found nothing else I've eaten to be even remotly unusual.

Dunno, might depend on how it's prepared. I had it in a Greek restaurant and it was positively scrumptious.

Well, it's very common in these parts, so I think the recipe should be the same. It all comes down to your taste, I have a friend who can eat a pile of them, and I get sick just looking at it.
