Maybe from the word "another"?

In the same family is "druther" - meaning "I'd rather", and is now even pluralized as in "if I had my druthers...".

I can't stand people using apostrophes to indicate a plural (e.g. apostrophe's). The same people then miss them out when they should be there to indicate possession. Then don't get me started on the use of apostrophes with possessive plurals.

Argh!

I hate it when people say "sup" or "prolly".

I believe the word "another" is actually "an other". That means that the word "nother" was born by robbing "other" of its comerade in another way. Now both are very sad, because "an" has been ripped in half, and "other" just has half of his "an".

They will be very happy when they find back to each other, and will hug each other.

And then they are going to meet the families of the other, and there will be a happy end.

I would think so, at least I've seen it spelled that way in newspaper articles.

Argh!

Don't get me started on the use of the apostrophe in the german language:

We have none! But every idiot thinks they have to put in apostrophes! And the german government now says it is allowed, but should be avoided, just because people are too stupid to write proper german.

And they don't even use them in the right ways! They don't know how they are used in english, either!

Actually, I don't think I've ever seen the expression, "the HI-Virus" before. "HIV" or the spelled-out version, Human Immunodeficiency Virus, are the most common usage.

Oh, could someone please enlighten me what's the correct form of possessive plural in English? I have simply forgotten.
Is it " apostrophes' " or " apostrophes's "? I think it's the former, but I'm never sure (and sometimes think it's the latter).

My teacher told me that both work, but the first one is more common.

Probably because the second one looks awkward.

I remember hearing the same thing. I have this problem with my name, too: should I spell it Joonas' or Joonas's? It's not even a plural, just a name ending with 's'.

Same as with the plural.

It's " Joonas' " or "Joonas's", because it is still the abbreviation of "Joonas his ...". I would choose the first one, because it really looks better.

I learned that if it was a plural, then you use just the apostrophe, but if it was a name or other word ending in "s", then you use the apostrophe and the "s".

the brothers' sweaters
Bob Jones's car
the Joneses' house

But since that was a long time ago, they may have simplified things somewhat.

Thanks for the info!

Which brings us to the topic of English quotation marks... I think it sucks that it's actually single-quotations marks ('), which makes them easily confusable with apostrophes... (Thus I often use double-quotation marks, although I think it's not correct.)

I find it funny that I am here, explaining the use of english grammar to native english people (mostly).

Double quotes are correct. In a quote within a quote, you use single quotes.

Jack said, "I wish I'd heard her say, 'tomorrow, not today', before I rushed all around trying to get that thing for her."

Well maybe it is used when referring to the virus itself, not the... infection? Does that make sense...

Well, the term "HI virus" is apparently used in Finland at least, as we got a confirmation from Swordie, too.
