Birthday
Did we have this poll once before? I think so. But just for the kicks, I'll do this one again for you, folks.
EDIT: That "nineteen" option is for a very special person whom I met in kindergarten and who had the strangest sense of logic ever. Maybe she'll register and vote here. One never knows.

What led me to ask the question is this: Is your first birthday the very day you are born, they day you are 0 years old? In that case, you've got one more birthday, the 0th birthday... so that when you are seventeen years old you have had 17 birthdays PLUS the 0th birthday, which makes 18 birthdays.

Didn't your poll ask how old you are and not how many birthdays you've had?
0-1 = 1 year of time - at the end you are 1 year old 1-2 = 2..............................................2 years old 2-3 = 3..............................................3.. ......... . . . . . . 17-18 = 18.........................................18 years old, and at the beginning of your 19th year FGM

On almost related note: I have a friend born on February 29th. Technically he had 5 bithdays during his lifetime, so I like teasing people with claiming that I know a cigarette-smoking 5-year old.

0 first birthday 1 second birthday 2 third birthday 3 fourth birthday 4 fifth birthday 5 sixth birthday 6 seventh birthday ... 16 seventeenth birthday 17 eighteenth birthday So if you count the day you are born as a "birthday", you are seventeen years old on your eighteenth birthday...

But when you are born, that is not your birthday. That is your day of birth!

But she's right! we celebrate birthdays on the anniversary of the date of birth. You aren't born one year old, so your first birthday isn't till 365 days later.

P.S. The word 'bugger' is used often in Harry Potter books. And also in some of Terry Pratchett's books, but with a rather different meaning.

The word "Bugger" Wormie is typically English and is a word I often use, (especially here in Yorkshire) as its more of an acceptable curse then "fu*k, bast!%d or sh&t"
And as I swear like a trooper, this is a good thing. Plus, its just a great word, just like "dubreefirkin"...or "thingamibob". Although how the word "minging" gets in the English Dictionary is beyond me... but of course now I am talking out of my rectum

Yes, I think day of birth = birthday - thus you're 17 years old, when you're having your 18th birthday - although we call it '17th birthday' when we celebrate it (which technically is wrong). '17th anniversary of your birthday' would be more precise, but is a bit long. |
